John Henry Thornell was born in 1855 in Belford, Victoria, Australia, son of Ann (Lock) Thornell and Henry Thornhill.^{[citation needed]}

He married Mary Ann Maria Hollyock on 21 November 1882 in St Kilda, Victoria.^[1] Their children were:^{[citation needed]}
