Norman Ernest Stanley Thornell was born in 1897 in Tyabb, Victoria, Australia, son of Mary Ann Maria (Hollyock) Thornell and John Henry Thornell.^{[citation needed]}

He married Agnes Helena Gibson in 1918 in Victoria.^[1]

Norman died in July 1978 in Shoreham, Victoria, aged 81 years.^[2] His remains were buried on 26 July 1978 in Hastings, Victoria.^{[citation needed]}
