Biography

Leland King was born in Appalachia, in New York. See Appalachia Project.

Leland E. King was born on October 4, 1907 in New Hudson, Allegany, New York. He was the son of Louis King, a farmer, and Elvena Mix. ^[1] In 1915, he lived in Rushford, Allegany, New York with his parents and siblings - Hanford, Maynard, Mina and Dorothy. ^[2]

On October 5, 1928, Leland married Lena May Carpenter, daughter of Oscar Carpenter and Ella Smith, in Olean, Cattaraugus, New York. ^{[3] [4]} Leland and Lena lived with his parents in Olean, Cattaraugus, New York in 1930. Leland was employed by a silk mill and Lena worked in a box factory. ^[5]

On April 6, 1936, Leland was fatally shot when he got in the middle of a child custody battle between a friend, Kenneth Crosthwaite and his estranged wife, Kathryn Crosthwaite, in Olean, Cattaraugus, New York. Kenneth Crosthwaite shot his wife and Leland, and then turned the gun on himself, resulting in the deaths of all three. ^[6]

Leland was buried in Bellville Cemetery, Bellville, Allegany, New York. ^{[7] [8]}
