Biography

Hannah was a Friend (Quaker)
Based on a study of the 11 children of William and Hannah (Eaton) Soule b. 1692-1712: the third son is Benjamin and the seventh child is Sarah. The line-up of the 11 children and who they were named after is thus:
  1. William Soule [named after father; named after mother's deceased brother William Eaton]
  2. Hannah Soule [named after mother]
  3. George Soule [named after father's father George-2 Soule]
  4. Benjamin Soule [named after mother's father Benjamin-2 Eaton; also mother's brother Benjamin Eaton]
  5. Mary Soule [named after mother's father's half-sister Mary (Billington) Sabin; named after father's sister Mary (Soule) Devol]
  6. Joseph Soule [named after mother's father's half-brother Joseph Billington]
  7. Sarah Soule [named after mother's mother; named after mother's sister Sarah (Eaton) Rickard; named after father's sister Sarah (Soule) Tibbets]
  8. Alce/alice Soule
  9. Samuel Soule [named after mother's father's half-brother Samuel Eaton, who m. mother's father's half-sister Martha (Billington) Eaton, and thir son Samuel Eaton, b. ca. 1664]
  10. Jonathan Soule [perhaps named after Jonathan Devol, father-in-law of father's sister Mary (Soule) Devol, and thus reflecting the influence of membership in Dartmouth Monthly Meeting]
  11. Deborah Soule [named after father's deceased sister and father's mother]

THIS IS ALL NEW WORK and supercedes the old assumption that Hannah was a Brewster (apparently this myth originated after 1980, when the old silver book on George Soule was published). The old volume 3 of the silver book series by the Mayflower society is now out of date; that book did not give Hannah any parentage. All I have been able to figure out is that someone put the Brewster connection into print in Nutmegger 15:429 and everybody has been copying this false idea ever since!!

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Hannah by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Hannah:

Since 2015, with the tentative comment "apparently daughter of Benjamin and Sarah," I have waited for someone to come up with another proof for Hannah, wife of William Soule. In the absence of other documentation, we are left with the onomastic analysis of the 11 children's names. And then there is the following analysis of the Torrey database of marriages in New England before 1700, leading to the finding that the only couple who is available to be parents of Hannah is Benjamin Eaton and Sarah Hoskins-----when starting with the naming pattern of the third son being the name of mother's father. Then the naming of children 4-9 finds those first names among the close relatives of Hannah Eaton and William Soule. In particular, the first name Samuel is the first use of Samuel in the Soule descendancy. And Samuel Billington is a close relative [by marriage] of Hannah Eaton. Now, as I finish up the greatly expanded revision of the MF9 for Eaton, without the support of the General Society of Mayflower Descendants, I am including this Soule-Eaton marriage; this is not the first time a marriage was not recorded in a church. Grandfather Hoskins had been called before the Plymouth Church authorities since the people in Lakenham had neglected to attend that church after he was sent to teach the people in Lakenham. At his advanced age, he apparently did not want a repeat trip just to be grilled by the Church leaders, so did not register the two granddaughter's marriages shortly before his death. I am including my reasoning/findings in a series of "Appendices" in the 2-volume Eaton revision. If there is a better set of reasonings leading to a different surname for Hannah, I would be glad to correct my comments. But, given the available data, starting with the naming pattern of the children, I think I am correct. There have been staff changes in Plymouth; my guess is that those who favor this Soule-Eaton marriage have been purged. Plymouth just does not realize how limited the younger generations in 1660-1760 were in finding spouses...so we have a higher than expected endogamy rate. I have noted the first and second cousin marriages in the new Eaton revision.

2023 4 3 I agree with you whole heartedly. In answer to the union of William and Hannah, suppose the last name to some might be a quagmire. However, as a follow-up regarding an actual real union, I revisited the probate record of Bristol, MA of May 1723. The entry states clearly, she was William's widow, therefore, i.e., his wife. The will was witnessed at some point, and I can't see that happening without, those signing, that Hannah was not his wife in the eyes of the community. Can't be a widow without being the wife. She signed over her rights, which she could not do, without the court accepting that title and position. I concur the that trying to find a letter of intent may not be there. We know William was still associated with the meeting house as there are notes referring to him in 1721 or 1722. He had his outs, sure, but the association was still there. I cannot imagine his father or ancestors being in association with him if he were not. I respect you and your judgment in this matter. Thank you.

Not that I can tell. The newest pink book (2015) on George says Hannah is "apparently the daughter of Benjamin and Sarah" This is also the wording used for siblings George Soule and Susannah Eaton.

Is there more evidence/proof that confirms her as the daughter of Benjamin (other than the names of her children)?

Linda and others, I'm working on changing her father's name to Eaton. There is a profile already for Benjamin Eaton (spelled correctly), but he needs some disconnecting from erroneous parents. Thanks

Brewester-1 and Eaton-3436 appear to represent the same person because: Hannah Brewster has been disproved as wife of William by the Mayflower Society. The wife of William Soule(d.c.1723) is Hannah Eaton. Hannah Brewster never existed. and needs to be merged away.

Brewester-1 and Eaton-3436 do not represent the same person because: Different fathers and different generations.
Brewester-1 and Eaton-3436 appear to represent the same person because: Brewster was put forth by Ridlon, but the newest Soule research, shows this wife to be Eaton also a Mayflower Descendant. Merge into Eaton.
