Biography

Leoluca Castro is born and baptized 9 December 1816 in Corleone. He is the first born child of Stefano Castro and Carmela Streva, named after his paternal grandfather, as is traditional. His godparents are Giuseppe and Maria Gennaro, a married couple.

Leoluca is a farmer (villico). He marries Maria di Palermo on 6 September 1846. His parents are living.

Leoluca and Maria have at least eleven children together, all known from their baptismal records: two daughters named Carmela (1847 and 1856), Stefano (1848), three sons named Gaetano (1851, 1861, and 1862), two daughters named Castrenza (1853 and 1859), Maria Castrenza (1866), Liboria (1868), and Giovanni (1872). In addition, Maria Castrenza and Liboria are known from their marriage records.

The first daughter named Carmela is born and baptized on 23 November 1847, named after her paternal grandmother. Her godparents are Domenico Vinci, the unmarried son of Antonio, and Vincenza di Miceli, wife of Giuseppe Palazzo.

Carmela dies on 15 December 1847 at three weeks of age. She has a sister with the same name, born in 1856, who survives to marry. See the Cascio Family Space for a short discussion on naming conventions.

Stefano is born 25 October 1848 and baptized two days later, named after his paternal grandfather. His godparents are Michaelangelus Marino and Cajetana Maggiore, a married couple.
The first son named Gaetano is born on 27 March 1851 and baptized on 30 March, named after his maternal grandfather. His godparents are Martino Cardella and Francesca Mistritta, a married couple.

He dies on 16 July 1851 at three months of age.

The first daughter named Castrenza is born 27 May 1853 and baptized Castrentiam the next day, named after her maternal grandmother. Her godparents are Joseph de Luca and Francisca Paula Gagliardo.

Castrenza dies on 16 October 1854 at a year and four months of age.

The second daughter named Carmela is born on 10 December 1856, and baptized 12 December as Carmelam. Her godparents are Gaetano Cascio and Maria di Palermo (baptized Anna Maria, who has a similar name to her mother's).
The second daughter named Castrenza is born 15 April 1859. She is baptized Castreatian the following day. Her godparents are Giovanni Grizzaffi and Biagia Quaglino, a married couple.

She also dies in infancy, on 1 September, at four and a half months of age.

The second son named Gaetano is born 22 April 1861, and baptized the next day. His godmother is Carolina d'Anna, who is unmarried.

The second Gaetano dies on 7 July 1861 at two months of age.

A third Gaetano is born 6 June 1862 and baptized the next day Cajetanum. His godparents are Augustinus Scherma and Antonia Guadagna.
Maria Castrenza is born 7 September 1866 in her parents' home in via San Rocco, Corleone. Her father, Leoluca, reportedly age 40 (he is 50), villico, reports her birth. Maria Castrenza is baptized the next day. Her godparents are Vincentius di Gregorio and Catharina, his unmarried sister.
Liboria is born 23 November 1868 in her parents' home in via Santa Rocco, Corleone. Leoluca reports her birth. Although only two years have passed, Leoluca reports being ten years older: age 50 (b. 1818). She is baptized Liboriam the day after her birth. Her godmother is Paula Marullo, who is unmarried.
Giovanni is born and baptized Joannem on 21 April 1872. His godparents are Joseph and Antonina Fontanetta, brother and sister.

Giovanni Cascio dies at three months of age on 25 July 1872.

Carmela marries Paolo Arsena on 26 April 1875.

Stefano marries Bernarda Mondello on 21 November 1877. Leoluca and Maria are both still living at this time.

Maria Castrenza marries Gaetano Marsalisi in April, 1887.

The surviving Gaetano marries Rosalia Palazzo on 29 April 1889.

Liboria marries Leoluca Bonanno in November, 1889. Her father is living at this time.

Gaetano and his family immigrate to New York in 1901.

Leoluca dies a widower at age 90 on 23 May 1907 in Corleone.[1]
