Eliza was born in Rimouski, Québec, the daughter of Alphonse Matte and Calixte Leclerc, on 7 juillet 1871. She was baptized the same day at le Cathédrale de Saint-Germain-de-Rimouski, where she was given the name Marie Eulalie Elisabeth Matte.[1]
