Biography

Origins

Charles Barnes was born in England sometime between 1622-1634 (he was of age by 1655), the son of William Barnes and Thomasine Shepherd.[1][2]

A reference to his father appears in the East Hampton, New York records from a power of attorney dated the 28th of January, 1663: "I Charles Barns and son of William Barns Esquier of Eastwinch in the County of Norfolke gentleman Do by these psents and good Considerations moving me thereunto Improve Institute and Ordaine Mary my well Beloved wife as my true and Lawfull Agent to act and do in all my Estate In England belonging to me ye Afore said Charles by will from my father"[3]

Travel To/Life In Long Island

He was living at East Hampton, Long Island by 1655,[1] where he was the school teacher.[4] Earliest mentions of Charles were in 1655 when he ejected a student from the school house for unbecoming language and conduct.[5]

On 18 February 1657, he was deposed in court to testify on behalf of his father-in-law, John Hand, who sued his attorney Josiah Stanborough for a land sale in England that went bad.[6]

On 18 November 1663, at Southampton, Capt. Scott asked £100 from Charles Barnes for slander. Defendant made acknowledgment and was forgiven, but must pay costs. [7] The next week, on 23 November, 1663, his father-in-law John Hand in a land sale refers to Charles Barnes as "late of Easthampton", confirming that Charles was not living in East Hampton at the time.[8]

The last record for Charles Barnes in East Hampton is a note in the year 1686, where Charles Barnes's mark for cattle is recorded as "2 slits cross the fore part of the left eare" and after is crossed out, then recorded as being used by a "Mrs. Mullford". [9]

Marriage, Children and Divorce

Charles married Mary Hand (c1635-by 5 July 1687), daughter of John Hand and Alice Gransden, date of marriage unknown.[1] They had children:

  • John Barnes, born about 1655 in East Hampton, Long Island, married Hannah Linsley 18 June 1674 in Stonington, Connecticut. He died about 1688.[4]
  • Matthew Barnes, born about 1658 in Long Island, died about 1698.[4]
  • Sarah Barnes, born about 1662 in Long Island[4], married John Salmon 23 August 1683 in Southold, New York. She died 3 November 1738 in Southold, New York.[10]
  • Shamgar Barnes, born about 1663 in East Hampton, Long Island. He married Elizabeth Stead 2 November 1704. He died 13 December 1750 in Middletown, Connecticut.[4]

On 11 May 1669, in Lyme, Connecticut, a petition of Mary Barnes for divorce from Charles Barnes was granted. She remarried as his third wife on 3 June 1669 John Huntley (d. Nov 1676).[1] Jacobus points out that she was fined heavily and not charged with adultery because Charles had deserted her a few years earlier.[4]

Death

No information has been found about Charles after he left East Hampton and there is no evidence that he returned to England, therefore he died sometime after 11 May 1669, the date of the divorce petition.[1]

This profile was developed for the Magna Carta Project by Darrell Larocque in October 2021 and reviewed for the Project by Michael Cayley on 6 October 2021.
Charles Barnes does not appear in the Magna Carta Ancestry list of Colonial Gateway Ancestors, however he is acknowledged as a Gateway Ancestor by Richardson in footnotes throughout the Magna Carta Ancestry series. Charles is a descendant of one or more Magna Carta Surety Barons, including John FitzRobert, and most of this trail is documented by Richardson starting with his great-grandfather, Robert Drury (MCA II:92-94, DRURY). This trail was badged by the Magna Carta Project in December 2021. Charles is also the gateway in a trail to sureties Gilbert de Clare and Richard de Clare that was badged by the Project in July 2022. Finally, Charles is the gateway in a trail, through his mother, to surety baron Saher de Quincy that still needs development by the Project. All three trails can be viewed in the Magna Carta Trails section, below.
See Base Camp for more information about identified Magna Carta trails and their status. See the project's glossary for project-specific terms, such as a "badged trail".

I plan on developing this profile for the Magna Carta Project.

The most difficult parts of the Barnes line reside after they arrived in the Colonies (especially the origins of William Barnes who happens to also be an ancestor), but the development of these trails going back should not be nearly as difficult. The All Saints Church in East Winch, Norfolk prominently displays a memorial which names Edward Barnes of Soham, Cambridge, father of William, William Barnes, his father as well as Thomasine Shepherd, his mother. I've been pouring over sources for Charles, William and Edward for a while now and fortunately there isn't much obscurity. I welcome any feedback going forward and thank you all again!

Hi Ron, This profile is considered a Gateway Ancestor although he is not listed as such in Richardson's books. I've adopted the profile for the Magna Carta Project so we can track the trail between Charles and a surety baron. You are welcome to remain co-manager and I hope we can get your help developing this profile and trail.

Thanks, Traci
