Cecily (Cecilia) Bardolf was born in England, the daughter of Sir William Bardolf, 4th Lord Bardolph of Wormgay and Agnes Poynings.[1]
Cecilia's father, Sir William Bardolf, died in 1386 when she was a child, and her mother, Agnes Poynings, was already an heiress when she married Sir Thomas Mortimer after Sir William's death. Sir Thomas was eventually forced to abandon Agnes to avoid high treason charges and died in Ireland. The only male heir, her brother Lord Thomas Bardolf, had married into the Cromwell family who actively participated in rebellion beginning in 1405. He was slain in 1408 at Brabham Moor and gruesomely displayed at gates throughout many cities. This left Cecilia with nothing from her family after King Henry IV gave the estate at Wormegay to his brother-in-law John Holland, Duke of Exeter.[2]
In 1412, Cecilia and Sir Brian obtained a license so that they could choose their own confessors.[1]
In 1414, Cecilia and Sir Brian were legatees for the will of his father, Sir Miles Stapleton.[1]
She married about 1406 Sir Brian Stapleton, son of Sir Miles Stapleton and Ela Ufford.[1] They had children:
She died on 29 September 1432 at Ingham, Norfolk, predeceasing her husband, and was interred in the chancel at Ingham Priory.[1] The memorial to Lady Cecilia and Sir Brian was on the north side of the church of Ingham, with effigies of both present as he depicted as a knight with cuirass and she depicted in mitre head-dress. The name of their dog, Jakke, accompanied their effigies on the memorial. Over the canopy one could view the arms of "Stapleton impaling Ufford; Lord Bardolf, Azure, three cinquefoils pierced or, impaling Barry of six, a bend over all, Lord Ponyngs, perhaps; and Stapleton impaling Bardolf."[3] Also according to Cotman, the memorials to Lady Cecilia and Sir Brian were removed from the Ingham Church in 1800 without care by the minister and churchwarden and sold for the value of the metal.[4]
