Sir Edmund de Ufford (known as le cousin to distinguish himself from his cousin, Sir Edmund de Ufford, brother of Robert de Ufford, 1st Earl of Suffolk, known as le frère)[1], was born before 1314 to Sir Thomas de Ufford and Eve de Clavering.[2]
In 1337, England was at war with Scotland and Edward III had just entered into a war with France in which additional preparation for conflict was vital.[3] On 1 October 1337, the following was recorded at Westminster:
In 1346, Edmund was granted 40 marks for rent on an annual basis by Henry, Earl of Lancaster, for the manor of Higham Ferrers, Northamptonshire.[2]
In May 1356, he was provided a patent of protection for his voyage to Brittany in the service of Henry, Duke of Lancaster.[1]
In 1361, Edmund heir to his brother John, Lord Ufford, acquired the manor of Great Belstead, West Lexham, Poswick, Burgh, Glemham and Chippenhale.[1] [Edmund’s older brother Robert died before John.]
On 29 June 1368, Edmund is named as a legatee in the will of his cousin, Earl Robert de Ufford.[5]
On 20 September 1369, Edmund succeeded to the Barony of Clavering on his mother’s death.[1][2]
In 1371, Edmund presented as heir of his mother to the rectory of Blythburgh, Suffolk.[1][2]
On 2 April 1373, an Inquisition Post Mortem for John de Wylughby, knight. Norfolk: Eggefeld and Walcote notes that "the manors are held of Edmund de Ufford, ‘le cosyn,’ by knight’s service, as of his manor of Horsford."[6]
In 1374 (47th Edward III), Sir Edmund de Ufford was a witness to the assignment of Sir John Brewes as trustee over both Sir William Caly and Alice de Ufford's manor at Oxby as well as assets for their heirs.[7] Sir Edmund was a cousin of Eve de Ufford, the wife of Sir John Brewes.
He married Sybil Pierrepoint, daughter of John Pierrepoint and Ela Calthorpe.[2]
They had children:
On 3 August 1375, a commission was given to "Thomas Tyrell, William atte Broke and John atte Welde to find by inquisition in the county of Essex whether John Bataill and John Dargentem, tenants of certain lands in Chishull, co. Essex, held of Edmund de Ufford, 'le cosyn,' or any other tenant of the said Edmund, have attorned to Thomas Savage and others to whom Edmund alienated the lands in fee in his lifetime together with the fees and advowsons, or not, and who have made such attornments and to whom; as the said lands are held of the king as of the honour of Boulogne."[8]
On 21 August 1375, a grant was given "to the king's daughter Isabel, countess of Bedford, of the Blatherwycke. keeping of the lands late of Edmund de Ufford, 'le cousyn,' who held in chief, until the full age of the heir, together with the marriage of the latter, and so from heir to heir; provided that she find fit sustenance for such heir and support the real services and other charges incumbent on the lands."[9]
Sir Edmund de Ufford left a will on 1 September 1374, and his estate was probated on 3 October 1375. Sir Edmund died before 3 October 1374 and was buried at Langley Abbey, Norfolk, England.[1][2]
On 20 May 1379, his executors were named as Reginald de Eccles and Thomas de Flycham.[10]
The manor at Great Belstead was not granted to the de Ufford family until 1342 [15 Edward III] to John de Ufford his brother, and so Sir Edmund could not have been born at Great Belstead before 1314.[11]
