Biography

Luigia Marino is born 28 December 1848, daughter of Caterina Cusimano, age 36 (b. 1812), and Calogero Marino, her husband, age 43 (b. 1805), agricola. The birth is reported by the midwife.

Luigia's older sister, Rosalia, marries Antonino Castro, both shopkeepers, sometime before 1852. They have at least six children together. Rosalia dies at age 30 in the home of their mother, Caterina, on 4 June 1865. She is 30 years old.

A year later, on 24 August 1866, Luigia, age 18, marries her sister's widower, who is 34. Their marriage includes a dispensation. The civil marriage is completed the following year.

Luigia and Antonino have at least ten children together: three daughters named Rosalia (1867, 1869, and 1876), Rosa (1870), two sons named Pietro (1872 and 1883), Giovanna (1880), two daughters named Francesca Paola (1874 and 1878), and Salvatore (1885).

The first daughter named Rosalia is born and baptized on 13 August 1867. Her godparents are Marcus Cascio and Thomasa Cusimano, a married couple.

She dies on 18 September 1868 at thirteen months of age.

The second daughter named Rosalia is born and baptized Rosoliam on 18 March 1869. Her godparents are Giovanni Cardella and Domenica Gagliardo, a married couple.

Rosalia dies on 30 December 1869 at nine months of age.

Rosa is born on 24 October 1870 and baptized as Rosam on 26 October. Her godparents are Biagio and Calogera Marino, who are not married.

Rosa dies on 26 June 1871 at eight months of age.

The first son named Pietro is born 4 May 1872 and baptized Petrum on 6 May. His godmother is Paola Liggio, wife of Salvatore Colletti.

Pietro dies on 27 February 1874, at a year and nine months of age.

The first girl named Francesca Paola is born 24 March 1874 and baptized the next day. Her godfather is Leoluca Vinci, who is unmarried.

The third daughter named Rosalia is born 26 April 1876 and baptized the next day. Her godparents are Vincentius de Paula and Josepha, his daughter.

Francesca Paola, age two years, dies on 7 July 1876.

The second daughter named Francesca Paola is born 30 September 1878 and baptized the next day. Her godparents are her half-siblings, Giuseppe and Santa Castro.

Giovanna is born and baptized 12 October 1880. Her godfather is Calogero Castro, unmarried son of Antonino.[1]

Pietro is born 2 April 1883, and baptized the next day as Petrum. His godfather is Carmelus Pennino. According to the note below his baptismal record, Pietro marries in New York, at the Church of Carmine, on 20 June 1913, with his niece, Rosa di Carlo, daughter of Vincenzo di Carlo and Santa Castro, of Corleone.

Salvatore is born and baptized 9 October 1885. His godparents are his siblings Angelo Castro and Rosa, both unmarried.

Luigia, Antonino (listed as a trader), and their five children arrive in Manhattan on 24 June 1897 on the SS Oregon, which sailed from Naples. They are joining Antonino's nephew, Calogero Marino, a barber.[2]

Francesca marries https://www.wikitree.com/index.php?title=Special:Relationship&action=calculate&person1_name=Castro-328&person2_name=La_Sala-34 her second cousin] Stefano la Sala, aka Steve LaSalle, on 22 December 1902 in Manhattan.[3]

A margin note on Salvatore's baptismal record says he marries in New York at the Chiesa del Carmine on 11 April 1920 to Caterina Marino, daughter of Giuseppe Marino and Giuseppa Governali.[4]
