Maria Santa Castro (whose father is sometimes known as Cascio: see the Cascio Name Study above) is the daughter of Rosalia Marino, age 24 (b. 1835), and Antonino Castro, age 26 (b. 1833), a shopkeeper (bottegajo). She is born in her parents' home in largo delle Bucierie, Corleone, on 28 October 1859. Her birth is reported by Francesca Paola Gagliardo e de Luca, age 55, the midwife (levatrice).[1] She is baptized Mariam Sanctam the same day. Her godparents are Pietro and Antonina Marino, brother and sister.[2]
Santa (she is sometimes recorded with only the second of her given names, suggesting the name by which she is informally known) marries Vincenzo di Carlo on 10 November 1879. It is the first marriage for either of them.[3][4]
Vincenzo and Santa have twelve children together, seven boys and five girls: Antonino (1881), Giuseppe (not known), Rosa (1885), Marianna (c. 1885), two daughters named Caterina (1886), Giovanni (1887), Luigia (1889), Angelo (1891), Salvatore (1897), Maria Concetta (1899), and Calogero (not known).
Antonino is born 15 December 1881 and is baptized Antoninum on 17 December. His godparents are Michaelangelus Canzoneri and Joanna Greco.[5]
Santa's brother, Giuseppe, and Vincenzo's sister, Rosa, marry on 10 February 1885.
I estimate Marianna is born around 1885, twenty years before she marries. She is named after her paternal grandmother.
The first daughter named Caterina is known from the record of her death, at four months and 20 days of age, on 3 September 1886.[7] Caterina is named after a maternal aunt who dies as a young woman in 1884.
Giovanni is born and baptized on 25 August 1887 as Joannem. His godfather is the unmarried Blasius Puccio.[8]
Luigia is born 22 September 1889 and baptized three days later. Her godmother is her maternal aunt Rosa Castro, unmarried daughter of Antonino.[9]
Angelo is born 8 February 1891 in Corleone and baptized twelve days later. His godfather is Michaele Moscato, who is unmarried.[10]
The second daughter named Caterina is born 8 May 1895 and baptized ten days later. Her godmother is the unmarried Francesca Castro.[11] Francesca is Maria Santa's younger half-sister, and goddaughter.
Salvatore is born 10 April 1897 and baptized nearly a month later, on 2 May. His godfather is the unmarried Giliberto Bentivegna.[12]
Maria Concetta is born 1 June 1899 and baptized on the 26th. Her godparents are Mariano Colletti and Caterina Cascio, a married couple.[13]
Marianna marries Giuseppe Piazza on 7 October 1905.[14]
All seven boys---Antonino (Nino), Giuseppe (Piddu), Giovanni (John), Angelo (Capitano), Francesco (Ciccio), Salvatore (Toto), and Calogero (Leo or Lelio) immigrate to the United States. All but Angelo die there. [15]
According to notes on both their baptismal records, Rosa marries her uncle Pietro Castro in New York, at the Church of Carmine, on 20 June 1913.[6][16]Pietro and Santa have the same father, and their mothers are sisters.
A note on Luigia's baptismal record says that Luigia marries Antonino Castro from San Cipirrello on 20 October 1913 in New York, in the same church as Rosa.[9]
Maria Santa dies 2 November 1934.[15] She is 75 years old.
