Joseph was born in 1825 in Pickering, Yorkshire, England. The ancestral home of the Hardy's is West Heslerton. Both villages are located in the North Riding of York. Joseph was baptized November 6, 1825 in Pickering. His father Lancelot Hardy and mother Ann Wood later moved to another close-by Yorkshire village, Kirkby Moorside. Joseph's sister, Jane, was born there. Between 1842 and 1844, Lancelot moved to Canada and brought his family with him. Joseph would be 17-19 years old. The Hardy family settled in Meadowvale, a village in the township of Toronto, Peel County, Ontario. Meadowvale is about 23 miles from Toronto. Joseph married Isabella Hood, an immigrant from Ireland, who arrived in 1842 with her parents. The couple were likely married about 1849 as their first child was born in January 1851. Joseph and Isabella had eleven children, including one set of twins. Joseph was a teamster so he would have been on the road a lot with wagons and horses. Sadly, he did not live a long life. The clerk at Meadowvale registered his death as occurring May 7, 1880. He died of Congestion of the Lungs and he had been ill five days.
