Margaret was born in 1851. She was the daughter of Joseph Hardy and Isabella Hood. Margaret was born in Somerville, an old township in the northeast corner of Victoria that no longer exists. However, she grew up in Meadowvale Village in Peel County. She married James Henry at age 16. He was 22. In 1871 the couple was living in Port Hope in Durham County. James was a miller and had found work there. They already had the first of their seven children. In 1881 they had moved to Toronto where James was working as a miller. An employee, a flour packer, John Kerr was living with the Henry family. James died suddenly in August 1883 and her daughter Isabella died of tuberculosis in 1886. It was a difficult time for Margaret but she managed. In 1891, four of her children were living with her and she took in two boarders, Ralph and Sarah Green. In addition she worked as a laundress. In the 1901, 1911 and 1921 census records she still lived in Toronto; her grown children, some of them married with children, lived with her. Margaret died in 1931 at age 80 and her daughter Marion arranged for a memorial. Burial was in Mount Pleasant Cemetery.
