Biography

Rebecca was born about 1862. She was the daughter of Joseph Hardy and Isabella Hood. In the 1871 Census Rebecca was attending school. Her father died in 1880, creating a difficult situation for her mother as there were nine Hardy children living together. Rebecca, aged 18 was working as a tailoress which no doubt helped with the family income. In the 1891 Census, Rebecca and her younger sister Henrietta found work in Toronto as domestic servants of the William Hope family. Rebecca, aged 26, was a cook. Henrietta Hardy married but there are no more records located yet for Rebecca Hardy. Did she marry? Did she die? Or did she simply work for someone else? William Hope, her employer in 1891 was a stock broker. He died of heart failure May 8, 1894 at age 54. Most likely Rebecca had to find work elsewhere.
