Biography

Mary was born in 1841. She was the daughter of Lancelot Hardy and Ann Wood. Her father was a miller by trade. The Hardy family emigrated from Yorkshire to Ontario, Canada a few years after Mary's birth. They settled first in Meadowvale, Peel County. Mary's mother died when Mary was still a child and her father remarried. By age 18 Mary was working possibly in the home of a farming family. She married Matthew Hyatt around 1869 and they had eight children. Their first child William was born in Oil Springs, Lambton County (near Sarnia). Oil had been found there in 1858 and an oil boom followed, encouraging many in Ontario to find work in this part of the province. Later Mary and Matthew returned to Chinguacousy in Peel County. Their final child was born there in August 1884. Ancestry family trees suggest Mary died in December 1884. If this is true then it was from another cause than childbirth. As yet a death record has not been located.
