William was born in 1830. He was the son of Lancelot Hardy and Ann Wood. William became a blacksmith and worked at this occupation until his death in 1904. He first married Jane Irwin, her maiden name mentioned in the marriage record of their son William George Hardy. William and Jane had another son, Robert Henry Hardy and daughters Angelina and Jane (Jennie). Jane Irwin Hardy died in March 1865 and was buried in the Churchville Cemetery. William's second wife was Sarah Elizabeth Irwin, born in Ireland who has no known relationship to first wife Jane Irwin who was born in Upper Canada. Elizabeth and William had five children: Irwin, Lancelot, Jonadab, Mary and Joseph. Elizabeth died in April 1880 as a result of childbirth. She was 36. William married a third time, in 1898, widow Mrs. Evelina Burns, born Baker. In February 1904 William died of Cardiac Failure at age 73.
William Hardy's Blacksmith Forge was mentioned in the 1871 Census of Canada for Toronto Township, Peel County, Ontario, under Industrial Establishments. He invested $150 to start his business which he operated for twelve months a year. He had two males over the age of 16 working in the business and wages were $200 annually. The raw material was 2,320 pounds of assorted Iron & steel, valued at $400 worth of materials. He did all sorts of Blacksmith work and repairs. The value of the finished goods was $800.
