Biography

Ellen was born in 1843. She was the daughter, and fourth of five children, born to Alexander J. Gray and Elizabeth Ann (Kimple) Gray.

Ellen grew up with four (4) siblings.

  1. Sylvester Gray (1837–1861), passed at age 24.
  2. Miranda Gray (1839–1917), never married.
  3. Lady Jane "Janie" (Gray) Brown (1842–1906), married Charles Brown.
  4. Frances Darling (Gray) Tarbell (1850–1927). married Frank Lorrine Tarbell.

Ellen first married Jacob S. Sovocool (1828–1878), in about 1861 in Groton, Tompkins County, New York.

They gave birth to three (3) children.

  1. Alma Lillian "Lillie" (Savacool) Wood (1862–1943), married Frank John Wood.
  2. Arthur Eugene Savacool (1864–1947), married Harriet A. Harwood.
  3. Lena V. (Savacool) Ayers (1870–1926), married Rev. A. Clinton Ayers.

Jacob passed away in 1878.

She continued to raise her three children as a single mother and head of household after that time.

Ellen second married Reverend Estus Van Marter, her brother-in-law and a Wesleyan Methodist preacher, on 16 December 1885. Ellen was the second of Estus' four (4) wives.

Ellen passed away in 1901 and was laid to rest in the Groton Rural Cemetery, Groton, Tompkins County, New York, USA.
