Eugene's Memorial Page[7]
Born Arthur Eugene, called "Eugene." Most records incorrectly list him as either Eugene or Eugene A. Sovocool. This confusion carried over to his tombstone, in Peruville Cemetery, Groton, Tompkins, NY, in which Elizabeth Sovocool Stewart, his great-granddaughter, had erected some 45 years after his death and incorrectly listed his name as Albert Eugene Sovocool and his wife as Harriet Alberta “Hattie.”
It is confusing, because there was another Eugene, 38, his cousin, “Eugene S. Sovocool” (b. Sept 1861) who was married 26 Aug 1888 to a different Harriet, 29, (b. Nov 1870) in Summer Hill, NY. This Eugene lived in Groton with an elderly mother, 78, named Harriet Spaulding Sovocool (b. Apr 1822) the widow of Jacob “Eugene” Sovocool IV (b. 1821).
Eugene S. also lived with an older brother, Harrison, 53 (b. Jan 1847), and two children: Bertha, 10, (b. Mar 1890) and Floyd, 6, (b. Dec 1893). Harrison is buried in Peruville Cemetery, Groton, NY, along with our Eugene and Hattie and their oldest son, Howard.
This cemetery is difficult to find, by it lies adjacent to Sovocool Hill Road in Groton. The entrance is a dirt driveway next to several houses.
By 1910, our Eugene and Hattie have moved to Independence, Allegheny County, NY and a third Eugene Sovocool, 49, (b. abt. 1861/2) and Ethel, 39, (b. abt. 1871) lived in the area, listing his home as Groton, Tompkins County, NY.
By 1920, this Eugene is listed with “Ettie,” probably a nickname for Ethel in the same town.
So, it gets confusing with three Eugenes, married to either a Harriet, Hattie or Ethel/Ettie.
Research notes provided by Elizabeth (Sovocool) Stewart.
