Alexander was born in 1791. He is the son of Thomas Gray (1768–1811) and Sarah (Wilkes) Gray (1765–1859). [Another account suggests that Thomas Gray's wife was Mary (Liddle) Gray (1765–1824)].
Alexander was a combatant with the rank of Private in the U.S. War of 1812. He was attached to the 1st Regiment of Davis' New York Militia.
Alexander was a landowner in Tract #95 north of Peruville Center and south of Groton in Tompkins County, New York.
Alexander was the founder of the Groton Methodist Church which was affiliated with the Conference of the Wesleyan Methodist Denomination. He participated in the construction of the original building.
He first married Rachael Kimple (1793–1832).
They gave birth to four (4) children.
He second married Elizabeth "Eliza" Ann Kimple, Rachel Kimple's younger sister.
They gave birth to five (5) children.

Fine Art Gallery, Groton, N.Y. Duplicates of this picture can be had if desired. Negative No. [blank]." The setting, a blank background with round table with dark brocade patterned cloth, is the same as for a woman of comparable age and a younger man, tentatively identified as Eliza A. Gray (maiden name unknown) † and Simeon Gray, her son."
