Biography

Bertha Clark was the daughter of Joel Clark and Sarah Jane Bellamy, born on 1 Jun 1875 in Ashland, Boyd County, Kentucky.[1]

Bertha married Francis Marion May (1870–1946) on 4 Jun 1892 in Boyd County, Kentucky.[2]

Francis and Bertha resided in Oak View, Boyd County, Kentucky, where he was a school teacher. They had three children in Kentucky, and the family moved Ohio about 1902. In 1910, Francis was a coal miner and they lived in Athens, Athens County. By 1920, they were in Middletown, Butler County, and Francis worked as a machinist for a factory. The family lived in Dayton from at least 1929 to 1931, then settled in Wellston, Jackson County, Ohio for a few years.[3][4][5][6][7][8][9]

Bertha Clark and Francis May had the following children:

  • Joel DeWitt May (1897–1986)
  • Verna Gladys (May) Davis Lane Donovan (b. 1901)
  • Julia M (May) Davis (1903–1985)
  • Bettie M May (b. 1915)

Francis died on 1 Oct 1946 in Portsmouth, Scioto County, Ohio. Bertha died on 4 Jun 1952 in Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio. They were buried in Rush Township Burial Park in Rushtown, Scioto County. Bertha's obituary appeared in the Dayton Daily News on 5 Jun 1952.[10][11][12]

"Mrs. Bertha May, 76, of 4[36 N] Kilmer st., died at 3:30 p. m. Wednesday in St. Elizabeth hospital after a long illness. She was a native of Ashland, Ky., and had resided in Portsmouth, O., before coming to Dayton some years ago. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Julia M. Davis of Miami, Fla., and Mrs. Verna Donovan of Cleveland; a son, Joel E. of Dayton, four sisters, two brothers and three grandchildren."
