Biography

David Ulysses Clark was most likely born in Jun 1873 in Greenup, Greenup County, Kentucky, to Joel Clark (1828-1915) and Sarah Jane (Bellamy) Clark (1836-1920).

David married Marianne Viceroy (Reynolds) Clark (1879-1957) on 4 Sep 1898 "at the home of John Clark in Oakview" in Boyd County, Kentucky. They lived in Oakview unitl after 1917, when their next-to-youngest child was born in Boyd County.[1][2][3]

By 1920, they had moved the family to Ohio, Clermont County, Ohio. In 1930, they lived in Bowie, Desha County, Arkansas. David and Vicie lived back in Ashland in 1942, but moved back to Little Rock, Arkansas.[4][5][6]

David died in Little Rock on 9 Jan 1947 and was buried in Old Rosemont Cemetery in Benton, Saline County, Arkansas. A marker was not placed until after Vicie's death a decade later, and the marker gives his dates as "1874-1948".[7][8]

His obituary appeared in the Arkansas Gazette on 10 Jan 1947.

Research Notes

Birthdate: There is some disagreement about David's date of birth. Available evidence follows:

  • Grave marker gives his dates as "1874-1948"; obituaries and state death records confirm his date of death is in 1947, and that mistake casts some doubt on "1874" as the birth date.
  • 1900 Census - this census asks for month and year of birth; David's date of birth is "Jun 1872".
  • 1910/1920/1930 Census - all three of these censuses ask for "age at last birthday, and for David, they record 37/47/57, respectively. All three were enumerated early in the year - 25 Apr 1910, 2 Jan 1920, 8 Apr 1930 - and if David answered based on his previous birthday as June of the previous year, then 1872 is correct.
