Biography

Origins

Margaret de Clare, born about 1287 (aged 40 in March 1326/7), was the daughter of Juliane Fitz Maurice and Thomas de Clare,[1] Lord of Thomond in Connaught.[2]
Margaret had the following siblings: Gilbert de Clare, Knt.; Richard de Clare, Knt., 1st Lord Clare (killed at Battle of Dysert O'Dea in Ireland in 1318); Richard de Clare (second of name), king's clerk; and younger sister, Maud (married Sir Robert de Clifford and Sir Robert de Welles).[1]

Marriages and Children

Margaret married first to Gilbert de Umfreville, son of Gilbert de Umfreville, Earl of Angus, and Elizabeth Comyn.[1][2] They had no children. Gilbert died testate before 23 May 1303.[1][2][3]
Margaret married second before 1305 to Bartholomew de Badlesmere, Knt., son of Guncelin de Badlesmere and his wife, Joan,[1][3] daughter of Ralph Fitz Bernard.[4] They had one son and four daughters.
  • Giles, Knt., 2nd Lord Badlesmere, son and heir, was born 18 October 1314 at Hambleton, Rutland.[4] He married Elizabeth de Montagu and died without issue[4] on 7 June 1338.[1]
  • Margery, married first to William de Roos, Knt., 2nd Lord Roos of Helmsley; second to Thomas de Arundel, Knt.; and third to John Avenel, Knt.[1]
  • Maud, married John de Vere, Knt., 7th Earl of Oxford.[1]
  • Elizabeth, married first to Edmund de Mortimer, Knt., Lord Mortimer, and second to William de Bohun, K.G., 1st Earl of Northampton.[1]
  • Margaret, married John de Tibetot, Knt., 2nd Lord Tibetot[1]
In 1309, the king granted the barony of Chilham, Kent, to Bartholomew and Margaret and, in 1321, she was co-heiress to her nephew, Thomas de Clare.[1]

Imprisonment

In October 1321, Margaret resided at Leeds Castle with her children and refused admission to the castle to Queen Isabel. The castle was immediately taken by the king and Margaret and her son, Giles, were arrested and imprisoned in the Tower of London.[1] Margaret was the first female prisoner in the Tower's history.[5]
During the time Margaret was imprisoned, her husband fought alongside other rebellious barons, burning the town of Bridgnorth and fighting with the rebels in the Battle of Boroughbridge in March 1322. Bartholomew was captured soon after and was attainted and hanged as a traitor at Canterbury, Kent on 14 April 1322.[1][4]
Margaret was imprisoned until 3 November 1322,[4] when her son-in-law, William de Roos, Knt., secured her release.[1] She retired to the convent house of Minorite Sisters without Aldgate,[6] and had two shillings a day allowed for her maintenance.[1] She was released to go to friends on 1 July 1324.[4]

Lands

In 1327, Margaret petitioned to have her Clare lands reassessed. She argued that her brother-in-law had divided the property while she was in prison and, as the elder sister, she should have the first choice of properties. Her petition was granted[1] and King Edward III ordered the restoration of her lands to “Margaretæ quæ fuit uxor Bartholomæi de Badelesmere” by charter dated 22 February 1327.[7]

Death

In May ?1328, she was called Margaret de Umfreville, Lady of Badlesmere, in a lawsuit. She died between 22 October 1333 and 3 January 1333/4.[1]

This profile is in the trail between Gateway Ancestors Edward Kemp and Richard Kempe to several Magna Carta surety barons. I will be reviewing this profile against the Magna Carta Project's checklist to ensure it meets the project's current guidelines and will make any necessary revisions. Thanks.

No suggestion that Queen Isabella was Mortimer's lover at this time.

Team - I know there has been a lot of work on this profile. It's a great one. A couple of dates in the profile (appear to be sourced from wikipedia) differ from Douglas Richardson's Royal Ancestry, Vol 1, page 220. Death for Gilbert de Umfreville given as "died testate before 23 May 1303". Marriage date to Bartholomew given as "before 1305". I'm happy to shoot a copy of this source to anyone else for review. I will add this as a source to the profile as well. Thanks!
