Nathaniel was the sion of the Rev. George Burrough and Frances Sparrow.[1][2] He may have been born in Pettaugh, Suffolk, where his father was Rector. His birth date is not known and has been guesstimated.
Nathaniel married Rebecca Stiles, whose brother John lived in Stepney, Middlesex. Their marriage date and place are not known, but it is likely they married in England, before they moved to America.[1][2] They had oner son:
Nathaniel was a merchant mariner. Before 1651/2 he and Rebecca settled on the Patuxent River, Calvert County, Maryland. Later they lived at Roxbury, Massachusetts (where his wife is recorded as joining the church in 1657) and then back in Maryland.[1][2]
In 1674 Rebecca was given a letter of transfer by the church at Roxbury, Massachusetts in anticipation of her return to England, The next year Nathaniel sold land on the Patuxent River, Maryland. On 22 May 1676 he confirmed payment for this; the official court record also names his wife Rebecca.[3] Shortly afterwards he went back to England, where he lived in the Limehouse district of Stepney, Middlesex.[1][2]
Nathaniel's wife was buried at Stepney, Middlesex on 26 March 1679.[4] He himself was buried there on 6 March 1682/3, with the parish register describing him as of Limehouse.[5] His will was dated 13 December 1681 and proved on 23 March 1682/3.[6] (Douglas Richardson gives the year as just 1682.[1][2]) In his Will Nathaniel:
described himself as a merchant of Limehouse, Stepney, Middlesex
left £20 to his son George in New England
appointed Anne Wheeler, widow, of Limehouse sole executor, leaving her £10 and the right to all monies owed to him
