Biography

Bridget was the daughter of Thomas Higham/Heigham and Phyllis Waldegrave.[1][2] She was probably born in Suffolk, where her father resided. Her birth date is not known and has been guesstimated.

Bridget married twice. First, she was the second wife of Thoimas Burrough of Wickhambrook, Suffolk.[1][2] Their marriage date is not known. They had three sons and one daughter, including:

  • Thomas, named as one of his father's two youngest sons in his father's 1595 Will[3]
  • George, baptised on 26 October 1579[1][2] and also named as one of his father's two youngest sons in his father's 1595 Will[3]

Thomas Burrough died in June 1597.[1][2] His Will left Bridget a life interest in his real estate.[3] On 2 December 1597 Bridget married again, her second husband being Thomas French of Wethersfield, Essex.[1][2] Thomas died before 31 October when his Will (dated 23 July 1599) was proved. Bridget is left legacies in the Will so she was alive when the will was made.[4]

Bridget's death date is not known.

This profile was re-reviewed for the Magna Carta Project by Michael Cayley on 23 December 2022.
Bridget (Higham) French appears in trails identified by the Magna Carta project that were project-approved/badged in May 2015 from Gateway Ancestor Nathaniel Burrough to Magna Carta Surety Barons Gilbert de Clare, Richard de Clare, John de Lacy and Saher de Quincy. Approved and badged trails were later added to surety barons William d'Aubigny, Hugh le Bigod, Roger le Bigod and Robert de Ros. These trails are all set out in the Magna Carta Trails section of the Gateway's profile.
See Base Camp for more information about identified Magna Carta trails and their status. See the project's glossary for project-specific terms, such as a "badged trail".

alternate date for marriage to Thomas French here: Burke, Ashworth P. Burke’s Family Records on archive.org. If Bridget had a son Thomas by Thomas French, he was in addition to one who was fathered by Thomas Burrough(s), according to this document. There may be a few other facts in here on her and Thomas Burroughs to round out this profile if they are more compelling than other sources.
