Maud de Clare was the daughter of Thomas de Clare of Thomond in Connaught, Ireland, and his wife Juliane FitzMaurice.[1][2][3] Her date and place of birth are unknown, her birthdate is estimated as 1279.[4]
First Marriage and Children
Maud married first to Robert de Clifford, Knt., 1st Lord Clifford,[1][5] on 13 November 1295.[2][6] Robert was the son and heir of Roger de Clifford and Isabel de Vipont and was born about 5 April 1276.[2][6]
Maud and Robert de Clifford had two sons and two daughters:
Roger, 2nd Lord Clifford, born 2 February 1299[6] or 21 February.[5] Roger was taken prisoner at the Battle of Boroughbridge and executed in 1322,[2] perhaps on 23 March[6] at York.[5]
Robert, 3rd Lord Clifford,[6] born 5 November 1305, heir to his brother, Roger. He married Isabel de Berkeley[5] and had three sons.[2] Robert died 20 May 1344.[2][5]
Idoine, married Henry de Percy, Knt., 2nd Lord Percy.[2]
Margaret, married Peter de Mauley, Knt., 3rd Lord Mauley.[2]
Widowed
Maud's husband, Sir Robert, was slain at the Battle of Bannockburn on 24 June 1314,[5] dying testate.[2] In November 1315, while still a widow, Maud was abducted by John le Irish, Keeper of Barnard Castle, while she was traveling near Bowes Castle, Durham. A force of 40 men-at-arms, led by Sir William de Montagu, was immediately sent to her rescue.[2]
Second Marriage
Very soon afterwards, before 16 December 1315, she remarried (without license).[2][5] Her second marriage was to Robert de Welle (or Welles), Knt., of Worcestershire,[1] probable son of Robert de Welle, by Isabel de Periton.[2] They had no issue.[2]
Inheritance
Maud was co-heiress in 1321 to her nephew, Thomas de Clare,[5] inheriting Thomond, Inkisty, Knockany, etc. in Ireland and a moiety share of the manor of Tarrant Rushton, Dorset and the Stewardship of Essex.[2]
Death
Maud, Lady Clifford, died shortly before 24 May 1327.[2]
