family tree maker seems to have died. it was a really old version. what is a good replacement?

I have put the ancestors on Wikitree, but it doesn't help with cousins, etc. still living. I was keeping track of cousins on an old FTM, I meant to replace it but  I didn't get around to it. I need something that can read the FTM files. I run on a MAC

I downloaded the free Roots Magic Essentials, it read the FTM file. Now is the descendants chart worth paying to get the real version? You don't get it with the free.

At least I can update with cousins death date. Two just died. Now we have lost 7 out of 24 cousins on my fathers side.

If you have FTM 2014.1 version, you can upgrade to FTM 2017 for I believe for free. Just contact FTM Support and you should get the new upgrade which is a far better version than 2014.1 and it comes with Mac and Windows versions. Nice program I use it almost every day.

Replace it with the current version of FTM which you can get from Mackiev.

Another option, although it is web-based, is geneanet. There are both free and paid versions. You can upload a gedcom, but probably not a FTM file.

I think it is always best to have your main data file in a database on your computer (with backups, of course).

Every genealogy program provides somewhat different reports and charts for sharing information.  Many programs have free options that you can try so you can find one you like.
