Biography

This is the profile for Patience Grant, who married Stephen Sherman in Vinalhaven, Maine on April 12, 1794.

Date of Birth

Patience's date of birth is uncertain. Based on her date of marriage, Patience was probably born sometime in 1769-1776. In the 1850 US Census, Patience's age is given as 84, which would mean that she was born in 1766. However, ages of older people in census were often quite incurate.[1]

Parentage

Patience was probably the daughter of Capt. Andrew Grant. The factors supporting that assertion are (1) records establish that Andrew Grant was living in Vinalhaven from 1792-1800 when Patience Grant of Vinalhaven was married there,[2] (2) no evidence has been found in either the Vinalhaven town record book or elsewhere that indicates that there were any other Grants living in Vinalhaven in the 1790s other than Andrew Grant and his presumed children, (3) Andrew Grant's first wife as named Patience[2] and (4) Patience Grant was married in Vinalhaven on the same day as Andrew Grant's presumed son Solomon Grant.

It is possible, however, that, instead, Patience was the daughter of a close relative of Andrew's (a son or brother) who had died prior to 1794, so that Patience was living with Andrew in Vinalhaven in 1794. No evidence supporting that proposition has yet been found, however. Of Andrew's sons, only Elisha Grant (b. sometime in 1754-9) would have been old enough to have possibly been Patience's father. Elisha's children from his wife Hannah Crosby are, however, well established and did not include a daughter named Patience. Elisha could therefore only have been Patience's father if (1) Elisha was born at the earlier end of his possible birthdate range (say, 1754), (2) Elisha had a first wife (prior to Hannah Crosby), whom Elisha married about 1775-1776, and (3) Patience was born at the later end of his possible birthdate range (say, 1777). While all of those conditions are possible, they are less likely than Patience being the daughter of Andrew Grant.

Of Andrew's brothers, only his older brother Ephraim Grant also moved to the Penobscot River area. Ephraim had 9 children when living in the Pownalborough area of Maine by his wife Hanah, with the last child (Sarah) born in 1767.[3] Although it is possible that Patience was a later child of Ephraim's by either Hanah or a later wife, there is no evidence to suggest that was the case. In addition, since it appears that Ephraim was living in Frankfort, Maine until 1799,[3] it appears that there would have been no reason for a daughter of his to be living in Vinalhaven in 1794.

Place of Birth

Based on Patience's estimated date of birth (1770-1776) and the fact that Andrew Grant lived on Jeremysquam Island in 1770-2 and at Wheelersborough on the Penobscot from 1772-1790,[2] Patience was probably born either on Jeremysquam Island or at Wheelersborough.

Marriage

Patience married Stephen Sherman. The marriage intentions of Stephen Shurman of Isleborough and Patience Grant of Vinalhaven, Maine were published in Vinalhaven on March 13, 1794,[4] and they were married there on April 12, 1794 (the same day that Solomon Grant (presumably Patience's brother) married Katherine Lasdel in Vinalhaven, Maine).[5]

Residency in Islesborough, Barrettstown(?) and New Brunswick

As discussed in Stephen Sherman's profile, Stephen and Patience initially lived in Islesborough after their marriage, before probably moving to Barretts Town Plantation in the late 1790s, then to St. Stephen, Charlotte County, New Brunswick by October 1800 and finally to neighboring St. David shortly thereafter.

Children

Patience and Stephen probably had the following children. Their parentage is based on (1) the fact they were married in the same parish where Patience and Stephen lived, (2) their estimated dates of birth are consistent with their being childrenn of Stephen and Patience, (3) genealogies of Stephen's brother Calvin do not show them as Calvin's children, (4) there was no other known Sharman/Sherman in the parish who could have been their parents, (5) in the case of John and Elisha, the fact that they appear together on deeds with Stephen, and (6) in the case of John, the fact that a Patience Sherman of the right age to have been Stephen's wife Patience, was living in John's household in 1850.[1]

  1. John D., b. about 1795 in Islesborough, Maine, m. August 4, 1818 Sally Scott in St. Stephen and St. David Parish, Charlotte, New Brunswick, m. June 6, 1832 Ann Maria Smith in Perry, Maine, d. May 21, 1866 in East Machias, Maine. (See discussion and sources in John's profile.)
  2. Sarah, b. probably sometime in 1796-1797, m. October 13, 1817 James Brown, d. April 4, 1839 at Tower Hill, Charlotte, New Brunswick [6]
  3. Elisha, b. about 1798,[7] m. Hannah[7]
  4. Anna, b. probably sometime in 1799-1800, m. June 17, 1818 Jonah Sprague in St. Stephen and St. David parish, Charlotte, New Brunswick[8]
  5. Susan, b. probably sometime in 1800-1801, m. March 1, 1819 William Thirstin in St. Stephen and St. David parish, Charlotte, New Brunswick[8]
  6. Valentine, b. about 1805,[7] m. January 25, 1825 Thankful Scott in St. Stephen and St. David parish, Charlotte, New Brunswick[8]

The following persons may have also been children of Stephen and Patience. However, the apparent 6-10-year gap between the birth of Stephen's son Valentive and the births of Eliza and James raises doubts.

  1. Eliza, b. probably sometime in 1811-1818, m. August 28, 1836 James Beedy in St. Stephen and St. David parish, Charlotte, New Brunswick[8]
  2. James, b. probably sometime in 1812-1818, m. January 27, 1839 Margaret Connickin St. Stephen and St. David parish, Charlotte, New Brunswick[8]

Residency with Son John D. Sherman

After the death of her husband, Stephen, sometime after 1844, Patience apparently moved in with her son John D. Sherman, as the 1850 US Census for Marion, Maine shows a Patience Shermon as a member of his household.[1]

Death

Patience's date and place of death are uncertain. Since Patience was living in son John D. Sherman's household in 1850 but is not found in his household or elsewhere at the time of the US Census in 1860, she probably died sometime between those two dates. Since John D. Sherman was living in Marion, Maine in 1850 but was living in East Machias, Maine in 1860,[9] Patience probably died in one of those town.
