Biography

Birth

The birth of Elizabeth Dunton, the daughter of Timothy Duncan and Elizabeth (Smith?) Dunton, has been claimed by a generally reliable source[1] to have taken place at Georgetown (now Woolwich) Maine on 30 Apr 1747. Neither this source nor others making the same claim cite an original record. The published Georgetown vital records do not show her birth, and the date conflicts with her age at death as shown on her gravestone (see below). Because gravestone death ages are notoriously unreliable, and given her date of marriage, the 1747 date would appear to be a reasonable one.

Marriage

Elizabeth Dunton and Andrew Grant applied for a certificate of marriage at Woolwich, Maine, on 4 Apr 1767. The certificate was granted on 24 Apr 1767, and they were married there on 30 Apr 1767.[2] The published vital records of Georgetown, Maine, also show the marriage, but seven months later, on 27 Nov 1767.[3] This may be a misinterpretation of an original record of the birth of their son, Andrew Grant; see the Research Note on his profile for a further discussion.

Death and Burial

Elizabeth (Dunton) Grant is buried at the Old Burying Ground at Hampden, Maine, with a tombstone that shows a date of death as either 18 Mar or 28 Mar 1821 (the first digit is obscured) at the age of 70.[4]
