Biography

This is the profile for Mary Grant of Vinalhaven who intentions to marry William Cotrall of Barritstown were published in Vinalhaven on October 15, 1798.

Parentage

Mary was probably the daughter of Andrew Grant and Elizabeth (Dunton) Grant. That assertion is supported by (1) the fact that, as discussed in Andrew Grant's profile, his family lived there from 1792 to at least 1800 and (2) the fact that no evidence has been found in either Vinalhaven town records or otherwise that there were any other Grants besides Andrew's family who were living in Vinalhaven in 1798 when Mary was known to be a resident there.

Date and Place of Birth

According to the family registers contained in the Barrettston (later Hope) town records, Mary was born on Swan's Island on October 1, 1779.[1] Which Swan Island Mary was born on is uncertain. It is probably more likely that it was Swan Island on the Kennebec River than Swan's Island near Mount Dessert Island. As discussed in Andrew Grant's profile, it is likely that Andrew's family temporarily left Wheelersborough in 1779-1783 when the area controlled by British forces and it more likely that they removed to Swan Island on the Kennebec than Swan Island near Mount Dessert Island.

Marriage and Children

The marriage intentions of William Cotrall of Barritstown and Mary Grant of Vinalhaven were published in Vinalhaven on October 15, 1798.[2] No record of their marriage itself has been found.

According to the family registers contained in the Barrettston (later Hope) town records, Mary and William had the following children:[1]

  1. Mary, b. October 22, 1798 in Barrettston
  2. Salvina b. September 6, 1800 in Vinalhaven
  3. Ruth, b. February 28, 1802 in Barrettson
  4. William Jr., b. February 22, 1805 in Hope

1800 US Census

The 1800 US Census for Barretts Town Plantation includes a household headed by William Cothrill that contained one male 26-45 (William), two females under 10 (presumably Mary and Salvina) and one female 16-26 (Mary).[3] (Barrettstown Plantation included the future towns of Hope and Appleton, Maine.[4])

Husband's Death; Later Records

Mary's husband, William Cothall died December 25, 1805.[1] No later records relating to Mary have found.
