Biography

Richard Whitecross was born about 1756. No record has been found giving his age at any point in his life. Although no baptismal record for Richard has been found, a study of baptismal witnesses (see Research Notes below) together with a DNA triangulation[1] allow us to confidently include him as a child of Patrick and Alison Whitecross. Best guess to his birthplace is North Berwick, Scotland.[2]

In the parish of North Berwick, Scotland on July 12, 1781, Richard Whitecross married Margaret Runciman. Richard was a laborer. Both parties were from North Berwick. The proclamation was initially made on June 30. No cautioners were named.[3]

Richard and Margaret had six children:

  • James Whitecross, born June 17, 1782, baptised June 18, 1782, at North Berwick, Scotland. Richard was a laborer. The witnesses were George Black and John Whitecross.[4]
  • Janet Whitecross, born June 17, 1782, baptised June 18, 1782, at North Berwick, Scotland. Richard was a laborer. The witnesses were George Black and John Whitecross.[5]
  • Margaret Whitecross, born April 16, 1784, baptised April 18, 1784, at North Berwick, Scotland. Richard was a laborer. The witnesses were the Congregation.[6]
  • Peter Whitecross, born September 16, 1786, baptised September 24, 1786, at North Berwick, Scotland. Richard was a laborer. The witnesses were the Congregation.[7]
  • William Whitecross, born April 4, 1790, baptised April 11, 1790, at North Berwick, Scotland. The witnesses were the Congregation.[8]
  • Elisabeth Whitecross, born June 27, 1795, baptised July 4, 1795 at North Berwick, Scotland. The witnesses were Geo. Black and John Douglass.[9][10]

Richard Whitecross appears as a witness at several events. They include:

On December 5, 1822, 6 shillings 8 pence was paid for "Richard Whitecross's Daughter's" mortcloth.[15] The size of the fee shows that this daughter was an adult, and the fact that she was listed as a daughter, rather than someone's wife, indicates that she was not married. Of Richard's three daughters, this record is most likely for his daughter Janet.

On February 7, 1824, 7 shillings was paid for a mortcloth for Richard Whitecross's funeral.[16] His wife, Margaret Runciman, would survive another seven years.

Four of Richard Whitecross's children died after civil registration of deaths began. They described their father as follows:

  • On December 4, 1860, he was described as "Richard Whitecross, domestic coachman".[17]
  • On July 28, 1863, he was described as "Richard Whitecross, coachman".[18]
  • On April 11, 1868, he was described as "Richard Whitecross, deceased coachman".[19]
  • On July 21, 1868, he was described as "Richard Whitecross, deceased coachman".[20]

Research Notes

Similarly Named Individuals

There were other people named Richard Whitecross who were associated with North Berwick between 1700 and 1850. In order to avoid conflating them, we list them here:

  • Richard Whitecross, baptised September 28, 1712 at North Berwick, son of John Whitecross and Christian Dobie.[21] He probably died young, as his parents reused the name.
  • Richard Whitecross, baptised November 17, 1717 at North Berwick, son of John Whitecross and Christian Dobie.[22] All of his children appear to be baptised in parishes other than North Berwick.
  • Richard Whitecross, born March 22, 1777 at Dirleton, son of John Whitecross and Euphan Keltie[23], married Jean Haldane in 1801[24], moved to North Berwick sometime between 1810[25] and 1817[26], died in North Berwick in 1845[27]. He had (at least) eight children. Of his three daughters, two were married in 1827[28] and 1829[29][30], the third (born in 1807) was not yet an adult in 1822.
  • Richard Whitecross, born December 24, 1806 at North Berwick, son of James Whitecross and Mary Manderson.[31]
  • Richard Whitecross, born March 12, 1810 at Stenton, son of Richard Whitecross and Jean Haldane.[32] His parents moved to North Berwick by 1817.
  • Richard Whitecorse, born October 17, 1814 at Athelstaneford, son of William Whitecross and Margaret Burnet.[33] He was living in Dirleton (the neighboring parish) by 1841, and died there in 1883.
  • Richard Whitcross, born October 30, 1819 at North Berwick, son of Peter Whitecross and Elizabeth Runciman. He died there in 1879.[34]

Note that none of these individuals are candidates to be this Richard Whitecross.

Analysis of the Identification of the Parents of Richard Whitecross

A DNA triangulation exists to confidently identify the parents of Richard Whitecross as Patrick Whitecross and Alison Wood.[1]

Additionally, a study of the baptismal witnesses suggests that Richard Whitecross was a brother of John Whitecross, James Whitecross, and Peter Whitecross, all of whom were sons of Patrick Whitecross and Alison Wood. The specific evidence includes:

Therefore, Richard appears to be related to John, Peter, and James. Peter is also related to a second Peter. John is also related to Patrick and George. In examining the Whitecross families of North Berwick, we find that Patrick Whitecross (1720) and his wife Alison Wood (1718) had sons John (1746), James (1748), George (1752) and Peter (1754). Also, Patrick was sometimes called Peter. This suggests that Richard was also one of his sons.

  1. 1.0 1.1 Paternal and Maternal relationships are both confident based on a triangulated group on MyHeritageDNA who share a 15.3 cM segment on chromosome 16, consisting of Steven Wilson and Lisa (Watts) Cameron, his 6th cousin 1x removed, and JK, his 6th cousin. (Lisa and JK are 5th cousins 1x removed.) These matches have been independently verified by via the MyHeritage Chromosome Browser. Their most-recent common ancestors are Patrick Whitecross and Allison Wood, the 5x great grandparents of Steven Wilson and 6x great grandparents of Lisa (Watts) Cameron and 5x great grandparents of JK.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Richard by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Richard:
