James Whitecross was baptised on March 13, 1748 in North Berwick, Scotland. His parents were named as Peter Whitecross and Alison Wood. Witnesses at the baptism were John Whitecross and James Wood.[1]

He married Mary Crawford sometime before 1778, probably in North Berwick. They had the following children:

  • Jean Whitecross, born May 28, 1778, baptised June 7, 1778, in North Berwick, Scotland. The father was a mason. The witnesses were the Congregation.[2]
  • James Whitecross, born November 14, 1782, baptised November 24, 1782, in Tranent, Scotland. The parents lived in Cockenzie. Witnesses were Richard Whitecross and Peter Whitecross.[3]
  • Mary Whitecross, born September 27, 1785, baptised October 2, 1785, in Tranent, Scotland. The parents lived in Cockenzie. Witnesses were David Sim and Alexander Barber.[4]
  • Alison Whitecross, born August 8, 1789, baptised August 15, 1789, in Tranent, Scotland. The parents lived in Cockenzie. Witnesses were Geo. Morison and Thos. White.[5]
  • Janet Whitecross, born August 8, 1789, baptised August 15, 1789, in Tranent, Scotland. The parents lived in Cockenzie. Witnesses were Geo. Morison and Thos. White.[6]
  • William Whitcross, born July 19, 1792, baptised July 26, 1792, in Tranent, Scotland. The parents lived in Cockenzie. Witnesses were Geo. Morison and Thomas White.[7]
  • Heriot Whitcross, born February 5, 1796, baptised February 13, 1796, in Tranent, Scotland. The parents lived in Cockenzie. Witnesses were John Roger and James Roger.[8]

James Whitecross was also a witness at some events:

  • On October 2, 1785, James Whytecross and George Morrison were witnesses at the baptism of John Sim, son of David Sim and Helen Kellie.[9] This is the same day that Mary Whitecross was baptised, and the surname was recorded differently.
  • On July 26, 1792, George Morison and James Whitcross were witnesses at the baptism of Janet Meek, daughter of John Meek and Janet Allen.[10] This is the same day that William Whitcross was baptised.

James Whitecross, mason in Cockenzie, died June 1, 1809, at age 61, of a fever. He was buried on June 4. [11]
