Biography

James Whitecross was born on November 14, 1782, and baptised on November 24, 1782 in Tranent, Scotland. The record names his parents as James Whitecross of Cockenzie and his wife Mary Crawfurd, and the baptismal witnesses were Richard Whitecross and Peter Whitecross.[1] It is worth noting that other records state that his father James Whitecross was a mason.[2][3]

James Whitecross married Christian Waddell at some time probably before 1805. They had the following children:

  • Christian Whitecross, born September 17, 1805, and baptised on October 25, 1805 in Edinburgh, Scotland.[4]
  • James Whitecross, born August 8, 1807, and baptised on August 11, 1807, in Edinburgh, Scotland.[5] James died and was buried on January 27, 1811 in Edinburgh.[6]
  • Mary Whitecross, born October 11, 1809, and baptised on October 14, 1809 in Edinburgh, Scotland.[7]
  • Janet Whitecross, born January 9, 1812, and baptised on January 16, 1812 in Edinburgh, Scotland.[8]
  • James Whitecross, born June 1, 1814, and baptised on June 2, 1814 in Edinburgh, Scotland.[9] James died on March 23, 1817, and was buried on March 25, 1817 in Edinburgh.[10]
  • William Whitecross, born April 26, 1817, and baptised on May 1, 1817 in Edinburgh, Scotland.[11] William died on December 26, 1817, and was buried on December 28, 1817 in Edinburgh.[12]
  • Euphemia Whitecross, born August 15, 1819, and baptised on August 25, 1819 in Edinburgh, Scotland.[13] Euphemia died on May 8, 1821, and was buried on May 11, 1821 in Edinburgh.[14]
  • James Whitecross, born October 4, 1821, and baptised on October 11, 1821 in Edinburgh, Scotland.[15]
  • Alice Whitecross, born January 27, 1824, and baptised on February 4, 1824 in Edinburgh, Scotland.[16]
  • Margaret Whitecross, born May 24, 1826, and baptised on June 2, 1826 in Edinburgh, Scotland.[17]
  • Jean Gibson Whitecross, born December 14, 1830, and baptised on December 24, 1830 in Edinburgh, Scotland.[18]

Every one of the baptismal records of his children identified James Whitecross as a mason, the same occupation as his father had. In 1805 he was living in Portobello. From 1807 to 1830 he was living in Stockbridge, and specifically at Spring Gardens in 1821 and 1826, and on Braids Row in 1830.

Christian Waddel, age 45, wife of James Whitecross, died on October 18, 1832 at Stockbridge.[19]

James Whitecross, mason, and resident of No. 1 Braids Row, married his second wife, Catherine McGregor, on May 28, 1841.[20] James and Catherine did not have any children together.

In the 1841 census, taken on June 6, James Whitecross (age 49, mason) was living on Hamilton Place in Edinburgh with his wife Cathrine Whitecross (age 40) and daughter Jane Whitecross (age 8).[21] Note that the ages in this record are inaccurate.

James Whitecross, mason, age 60, died of apoplexy on December 3, 1842 at 8 Hamilton Place.[22]
