Biography

On June 18, 1782, in North Berwick parish, Scotland, "Richard Whitecross Labr and Margaret Runsiman his wife had a son and daughter born 17th baptized the above date witnesses George Black & John Whitecross and named James & Janet".[1]

On October 26, 1805, in North Berwick parish, Scotland, "James Whitecross & Mary Manderson both in this Parish gave up their names to be proclaimed in order to marriage & were married accordingly before these witnesses Richd Whitecross & Jas Manderson".[2] On October 28, 1805, James paid five shillings for the privilege of having "his marriage being thrice proclaimed on one sabbath."[3]

  • Richard Whitecross, born December 24, 1806, baptised January 4, 1807, at North Berwick. James was listed as a servant. The witnesses were Francis Hislop and Hugh Wilson.[4]
  • William Whitecross, born August 25, 1808, baptised August 28, 1808, at North Berwick. James was listed as a laborer. The witnesses were the Congregation.[5]
  • James Whitecross, born March 8, 1811, baptised March 17, 1811, at North Berwick. The father James was a laborer. The witnesses were the Congregation.[6]
  • Margaret Whitecross, born April 23, 1815, baptised May 7, 1815, at North Berwick. James was listed as a laborer. The witnesses were Peter Whitecross and James Manderson.[7]
  • Janet Whitecross, born September 21, 1817, baptised September 30, 1817, at North Berwick. James was listed as a laborer. The witnesses were Richard Whitecross and Peter Whitecross.[8]
  • Peter Whitecross, born July 11, 1821, baptised July 22, 1821, at North Berwick. James was listed as a laborer. The witnesses were Richard Whitecross and Peter Manderson.[9]

James Whitecross (age 60, agricultural laborer) and his wife Mary (age 59) were living at Westgate, North Berwick, at the time of the 1841 census. Their children Janet (age 20) and Peter (age 19, agricultural laborer), and Mary's sister Christian Manderson (age 60), were also living with them.[10]

At the 1851 census, James Whitecross (age 68, herd, born in North Berwick) and his wife Mary (age 69, born in North Berwick) were living on Back Street, North Berwick. Also with them were their children Peter (age 27, farm servant, born in North Berwick) and Margaret, (age 36, house servant, born in North Berwick), and their granddaughter Mary (age 1, born in North Berwick).[11]

On January 4, 1855, James Whitecross was listed as a pensioner who received 3 shillings (per month?) from the Edwin Fund.[12] The Edwin Fund was a bequest by Alexander Home, Esq. for the poor.[13]

James Whitecross passed away on December 4, 1860, at North Berwick, and was buried in the North Berwick Church Yard. He was listed as a retired farm steward and widower, and was buried in the North Berwick Church Yard. His death registration named his parents as Richard Whitecross, domestic coachman, and Margaret Runciman. The informant was his nephew, John Whitecross, merchant of North Berwick.[14]
