Biography

Janet was born on September 21, 1817, and baptised September 30, 1817, at North Berwick, Scotland. She was the daughter of James Whitecross and Mary Manderson.[1]

In 1841, Janet Whitecross (age 20) was living with her parents at Westgate, North Berwick, Scotland.[2]

On August 28, 1843, the marriage proclamation of William Finlay and Janet Whitecross had been made three times, with no objections. William was a resident of Wigtown, and Janet was a resident of North Berwick.[3]

William and Janet had several children:

  • Mary Finlay, born about 1849, in Wigtownshire, Scotland.[4]
  • John Finlay, born on May 26, 1851. The baptism was recorded in June, 1855, at Haddington, Scotland. The father was a miller,[5]
  • a son born at Haddington,[6] who died at the age of 8 hours on June 16, 1855, at Clerkington Mill, Haddington, Scotland. The father William Finlay, miller, was the informant.[7]
  • a son born at Haddington,[8] who died at the age of 24 hours on July 15, 1856, at Spear's Close, Haddington, Scotland. The father William Finlay, carter, was the informant.[9]
  • James Finlay, born November 16, 1857, at Ayton, Scotland.[10]
  • William Finlay, born May 3, 1859, at Ayton, Scotland.[11]
  • James Finlay, born November 2, 1861, at Eyemouth, Scotland.[12]
  • Peter Finlay, born March 1, 1865, at Eyemouth, Scotland.[13]

At the 1861 census, William Finlay (game keeper, age 41, born in Prestonkirk) and his wife Janet (age 42, born at North Berwick), were living at Netherbyres Bridge, Eyemouth, Scotland. Also living with them were their children Mary (age 12, born in Wigtown), John (age 9, born in Haddington), and William (age 1, born in Ayton).[4]

At the 1871 census, William Finlay (agricultural laborer, age 50, born in Prestonkirk) and his wife Janet (age 51, born in North Berwick) were living at Ferneyside, Ayton, Scotland. Also living with them were their children Mary (age 21, born at Bladnoch), John (age 19, born at Haddington), William (age 11, born at Ayton), James (age 8, born at Eyemouth), and Peter (age 6, born at = Eyemouth).[14]

Janet Finlay, age 71, passed away on July 24, 1888, at Flemington Mill, Ayton, Scotland. She was the wife of William Finlay, agricultural laborer, and daughter of James Whitcross, agricultural laborer, and Mary Manderson. The informant was her son James Finlay.[15]
