Biography

Mary Manderson, daughter of William Manderson, laborer, and Margaret Morton, was born on December 28, 1781, and baptised in the parish of North Berwick, East Lothian, Scotland on 6 January 1782. The witnesses to the baptism were the Congregation.[1]

Mary Manderson married James Whitecross in the parish of North Berwick, East Lothian on 26 October 1805. The witnesses to the marriage were Richard Whitecross and James Manderson.[2]

James Whitecross and Mary Manderson had several children:

  • Richard Whitecross, born December 24, 1806, baptised January 4, 1807, at North Berwick. James was listed as a servant. The witnesses were Francis Hislop and Hugh Wilson.[3]
  • William Whitecross, born August 25, 1808, baptised August 28, 1808, at North Berwick. James was listed as a laborer. The witnesses were the Congregation.[4]
  • James Whitecross, born March 8, 1811, baptised March 17, 1811, at North Berwick. The father James was a laborer. The witnesses were the Congregation.[5]
  • Margaret Whitecross, born April 23, 1815, baptised May 7, 1815, at North Berwick. James was listed as a laborer. The witnesses were Peter Whitecross and James Manderson.[6]
  • Janet Whitecross, born September 21, 1817, baptised September 30, 1817, at North Berwick. James was listed as a laborer. The witnesses were Richard Whitecross and Peter Whitecross.[7]
  • Peter Whitecross, born July 11, 1821, baptised July 22, 1821, at North Berwick. James was listed as a laborer. The witnesses were Richard Whitecross and Peter Manderson.[8]

James Whitecross (age 60, agricultural laborer) and his wife Mary (age 59) were living at Westgate, North Berwick, at the time of the 1841 census. Their children Janet (age 20) and Peter (age 19, agricultural laborer), and Mary's sister Christian Manderson (age 60), were also living with them.[9]

At the 1851 census, James Whitecross (age 68, herd, born in North Berwick) and his wife Mary (age 69, born in North Berwick) were living on Back Street, North Berwick. Also with them were their children Peter (age 27, farm servant, born in North Berwick) and Margaret, (age 36, house servant, born in North Berwick), and their granddaughter Mary (age 1, born in North Berwick).[10]

Mary was buried on May 7, 1851, at North Berwick, Scotland. The mortcloth fee was paid on the same day.[11][12]
