Biography

She was born at 22 Church Street, Pietermaritzburg and baptised at the Presbyterian Church. Her sister Norna commented: "She was such a dear and such fun!" Norna told a story about driving out to their house Downside once with her when Emmeline stood up in the carriage and whipped up the horses and they went racing up to the house in Wild West style! It seems that Emmeline had been quite a fine artist. She had had pictures shown at a Water Colour Exhibition in London and a particularly fine one of a spray of dog roses hung above the fireplace in Granny Runciman's dining room. On the back it had a label stating that it had been shown at the "London Art Exhibition" – the date was in the 1880s. There were several other pictures which she had painted but no-one knows what happened to them. Her riding habit — in bottle green — had a 46 cm waist. It seems that she died from a burst appendix, or peritonitis following an operation for appendicitis.
