Biography

Shelagh was born in 1907. She was the daughter of William Gallwey and Emmeline Runciman. She passed away in 1996. ^[1] Shelagh trained as a nurse at the Johannesburg General Hospital which she completed in October 1932 with the Hospital Gold Medal for that year. She met Francis Goodwin Towert and they married in September 1933 but divorced after WWII. She worked in mine hospitals but, after her divorce, nursed at Baragwanath Hospital and then won a Commonwealth Nurses Fund Scholarship to study at Edinburgh University. She became a Sister Tutor and joined Edendale Hospital Training School. In 1969 she became Sister Tutor at Natal Medical School in Durban where she became Senior Lecturer in Nursing and retired in July 1979 aged almost 70. Subsequently she went to live with her eldest daughter in the Bristol are of England where she later died.
