John travelled from Scotland with his brother William on the 224 ton three-masted schooner Olympia which sailed from Glasgow on 10th April 1862 and disembarked at Port Natal on 10th July.
He went into business in Pietermaritzburg where he advertised his services in a newspaper as "Accountant, Conveyancer and Agent".
He was an enormous man reputed to have weighed over 300 pounds and is described once as Manager Pietermaritzburg branch Land and Colonization Company and later as Accountant.
He married at the old Presbyterian Church in Church Street, Maritzburg by special licence as his bride was under 21. After their wedding they travelled by wagon to her father’s house on his estate Cleland. Then they rode to Durban for their honeymoon. It appears that from there they went on to stay for a month at a “comfortable house” in Park Rynie lent to them by a Colonel Lucas.
John’s business appears to have been at 23 Longmarket Street and residence at one stage at 4 Loop Street (from PMB Directory).
Their house was a haven for all members of the family, especially in time of troubles. A large garden at the back was planted with vegetables and the "offices” included stables for two horses and a "Coach-house" with a loft for storing feed for the animals (from memoirs of Shelagh Gallwey Gallwey-11, his grand-daughter).
