OBITUARY. Mr. Robert Fairbairn, LSO., JP., died at his residence, Pindan, Peppermint Grove, early yesterday morning, at the age of 81 years. He was the eldest son of Mr. John Fairbairn, who, with Mrs. Fairbairn, came to Western Australia from England with the Australind Colonisation Company, members of which settled in the Bunbury district.

The settlement scheme was a failure, and Mr. Fairbairn's parents went to the Murray district, where they remained until they left the State, and settled in New South Wales, taking with them two brothers and three sisters of the deceased.

Mr. Fairbairn was born in Bunbury. He was educated privately, and, after a short career as a school teacher, he joined the civil service. He advanced in the service, and be was appointed resident magistrate at Greenough in 1873. and later he was resident magistrate in the Toodyay and also in the Sussex districts.

In 1882 Mr. Fairbairn was appointed a commissioner to inquire into the native question in the northern districts. When he had completed the inquiry he was appointed resident magistrate at Bunbury, and later he occupied a similar position at Fremantle, where he distinguished himself during a period of about twenty-five years. BOWKER, Frances Emily Cotton c.1809-1874:

Frances Emily Cotton Bowker (Mrs Thomas Arthur Bussell) was born about 1809. Her father was Captain John Bowker, Royal Navy, England, and her mother was Mary Bowker (née Yates). Before she married Thomas Arthur Bussell in 1847 she was much involved with the Plymouth Brethren, although coming from a staunch Church of England background. It was through Frances that Charlotte Cookworthy (later to become Mrs John Garrett Bussell – a pioneer of Western Australia) became involved with the Brethren after the death of her first husband, Mr Cookworthy. Charlotte and Frances were great friends and corresponded regularly with each other. Frances’ life was very tragic. Her two sons Charles and Arthur died when young. From her letters it is assumed that she was not in very good health and often away recuperating. Frances was a very religious woman and there is a collection of her religious writings, notes etc under the Miscellaneous section of these papers. She died in 1874.

Mid-1847 Frances marries Thomas Arthur Bussell 9 March 1848. Letter from Eliza Ca... illegible congratulating her on the birth of her first child Frances (Francie Sarah) 198 fols /507-574 Frances first son Arthur born in 1850. Frances’ son William Bussell born on 5 March 1852. Her son Charles was born in 185

Although it seems unlikely we'll ever find a yDNA candidate to prove how the family connects to the other Scottish Borders FAIRBAIRNs, perhaps some descendants might be interested enough to try autosomal DNA testing?
