Biography

Jane was born on 17 August 1843 in Bunbury, Western Australia.^[1] She is the daughter of John Fairbairn and Elizabeth Pollard.

She married Daniel Keen Congdon on 23 February 1861 at Serpentine.^[2][3] They had eleven children over 24 years.

DEATH NOTICE CONGDON.—On January 15, 1919, at Irvine-street, Cottesloe, Jane Ainslie, relict of the late Daniel Keen Congdon, and mother of Mrs. C. Y. Dean (Glen Forrest), Mrs. W. Hooper (Cottesloe), Mrs. E. G. Paddison (North Fremantle), Mrs. A. E. Jackson (Bunbury), and Florence, Robert, and Frank Congdon (on active service), aged 75 years.

Death of an Old Colonist.—By the death of Mrs. Jane Ainslie Congdon, (relict of the late Daniel Keen Congdon), Western Australia has lost one of its oldest residents. The deceased was one of the first children to be christened in the old Picton Church, near Bunbury, where she was born 75 years ago. Her father, the late John Fairbairn, arrived with his wife in this State in 1839. The late Mrs. Congdon, who was very well known in Fremantle, left a grown-up family of two sons, five daughters. 12 grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. One son, Frank H. A. Congdon, is on active service.

The funeral cortege moved from her late residence, Irvine-street, Cottesloe, last Thurs day afternoon, and proceeded to the Kar rakatta Cemetery, where the remains were interred in the Anglican portion, the Rev. H. J. Cooke officiating at the grave side. The chief mourners were:—Messrs. Robert Fairbairn (brother), Robert Cong don (son), C. Y. Dean. E. G. Paddison, W. Hooper, and A. E. Jackson (sons-in law), Leslie Hooper, Jack Dean, and E. Brown (grandsons), and W., A. and N. McLarty (cousins). The pall-bearers were Messrs. J. J. Higham, James Pearse, E. F. Duffeld, E. W. Snook, E. H. Fother gill, W. E. Wray, John Bateman, and G. John. Many handsome wreaths were placed on the grave, and numerous let ters, telegrams, and cards of condolence were received by the relatives. The fune ral arrangements were in the hands of Messrs. Arthur E. Davies and Co.^[4]
