Biography

Alexander Yates was born in 1845 in Dekalb or Warren Co., Tennessee, to Arwine Yates and Malinda Page. The family moved to Searcy Co Arkansas in the early 1850s, and then a few miles west into Newton Co. by 1870. In 1863, at age 18, Alexander enlisted with the Union Army in Jasper, Arkansas, and served in the Arkansas 2nd Cavalry during the Civil War. Alexander married Sarah Catherine Brooks in 1867 in Newton Co, where they lived, farmed, and raised 13 children, with grandchildren to come from 8 of them.
