Biography

Lorenzo Dow was born around 1841, near Smithville, Dekalb, Tennessee, to parents Arwine Yates (1815-1886) and Malinda Page (1819-1902).

His only record is on the 1850 U.S. Census, when he was 9 years old with his parents. If he reached an age of independence, this would have been after the family moved to Searcy County, Arkansas. Nothing more is know about him.

Lorenzo, no doubt, was named after the famous, eccentric American evangelist Lorenzo Dow (1777-1834). This became a relatively common name for American boys in the South. Two of Lorenzo’s cousins on his Yates side were given the same name.

N.B. Do not confuse this Lorenzo Dow Yates with his second cousin with the same name and a similar birth date. That Lorenzo Dow Yates (1839-1932), a son of Woodson Yates and grandson of Rev. John Yates, was born in White Co., Tennessee, lived and raised a large family in Putman, Tn, and moved to Texas after 1880. A first cousin of Lorenzo’s father Arwine was Lorenzo Dow Yeates (1817-1890), son of George Yeates.
