Biography

Amanda was born in 1858 in Searcy County, Arkansas, probably near Witts Springs, near Newton County. She was a daughter of Arwine Yates and Amanda Page, who had moved the family from Dekalb, Tennessee in the early 1850s. The family would move a few miles into Newton County in the 1870s.

Amanda’s first marriage was in April, 1868, to an older man, Daniel Hugh Martin, who said he was 35 but was closer to 40. They were near Mount Judea, Newton Co. They had one surviving child, Arwine Yates Martin, before Daniel died around 1880. In August of 1883 Amanda married William J. “Willie” Jones, who was only 13 years older. Willie, too, departed in a few years, leaving Amanda with two daughters. In 1888 Amanda took a third husband, George Washington Greenhaw, nearly 20 years Amanda’s senior, who had several children from his departed wife. Amanda and George had three daughters.

George W Greenhaw passed away in 1907. In 1910, Amanda was living with her two daughters, Virie and Lillie Greenhaw, in Big Creek, Newton, Arkansas. In 1920, Amanda was with the family of Lilly, then Lilly Smith with her own child, in Big Creek. Two grandchildren, Herman, 8, and Hersel, 6, were with them as well, listed as Greenhaw though their name was Criner. They had become orphans of Amanda's daughter, Vergie Criner. In 1830, at age 71, Amanda lived in what had become her own own modest home, with the two grandsons, Herman and Herschell Criner, age 17 and 16.

Amanda passed away in 1936 and was buried at Mount Judea Cemetery.
