Family Genealogies

Here is a list of published genealogies based on specific families. Click on the links below for more information. The additional information includes source location, online source links, and source citation examples. Each also has a "What Links Here" link that will list the profiles that already use the source. If something is missing, or wrong, please fix it or contact the profile manager.

Please feel free to add your own sources! This will help everyone. For ideas on how to create your own source Free-Space page, look at the examples below and see: How to Share Sources on WikiTree.

The oldest book in this list is A Genealogical History of The House of Yvery, published in 1742.

Old Genealogies Published 1845 or Earlier

Very few family genealogy books were published before 1845. If you know of any, please add them to the list below.

Rick,

The monolithic Sources-Family_Genealogies page is becoming cumbersome due to its' size. Perhaps it could be broken up, over time, by surname, starting with those that have a large number of entries? I think one loads the page with one particular surname in mind anyway.

For example, we could move the dozen Adams entries to Sources-Family_Genealogies-Adams.

This might allow room on the new page for any notes comparing the entries. It might also encourage one name studies, e.g. Folsom, to maintain the page rather than maintain their own.

The one downside I see is cases when one source page applies to multiple surnames, e.g. Jerome and Chapman. It should have entries on both the Jerome page and the Chapman page. It would be a copy/paste operation between those 2 pages rather than between two places on the same page, but I think its' a minor concern.

One thing I am uncertain about is the backend magic related to surname tagging, but I think that all remains the same.

Thoughts? Dana

Dana,

I too have thought about how to break up this large file. It has grown to a size beyond my wildest expectations.

I like that there is one place to go for searching. This allows for using your web browser to search for any word or phrase, such as the author's last name, or with a location name, or by date, etc. Separating into pages such as "Adams" would only help for people that are searching for the word "Adams".

I've thought about breaking it up into pages based on the first letter of the Surname: a page for surnames that start with A-B, and another for surnames that start with C-D, etc. We could then use inclusion to bring all these separate files into one. The end result would be exactly what we see now, but we would have to edit the individual files, which would be much smaller.

Anything we do is going to make it more difficult to edit, because then you will have to know what you are doing and be able to find the correct file to edit. That is the main reason I haven't done anything yet.

Perhaps categories would serve the searching issue, although not quite as flexibly.

For location, there is already Category:Sources_by_Location. Perhaps there could also be a Category:Sources_by_Author. A category for time period would be more complicated. There is also a Category:Sources_by_Topic and a Category:Source_Directories which might help out.

Beyond that, we'd probably need improvements in the WikiTree searching/tagging features.

Can imagine a WikiTree app that could help put the pieces together, scraping title/author/etc... from one of the common source sites (archive.org, books.google.com, ...).

Agree breaking this giganormous page into more manageable chunks would be helpful for locating links relevant to specific families, and for editing same. Personally thinking of alphabetical by family name (A, B C, D, ...; but not A-B, C-D, which would probably have to be split later anyway) pages that would be both listed on the central page (this one, minus all the individual titles) and members of a category.

Mostly I think people accessing this content are looking for a particular family name, would and if more than one, a footer with direct access to the rest of the alphabet would eliminate the need to go back to the central page or the category.

The disadvantage of not being able to screen-search the entire list we have now might be compensated for by either the ability to wiki search the pages in the category (not sure if that capacity yet exists) or view the contents of several user-selected categories together (pretty sure this doesn't exist, unless that's what you mean by "inclusion," Rick, but it's something I've been thinking about for some time).

Yes, any edits that need to be done systematically across 26 pages would require method & attention - or bots. But how often has that had to be done with the content of this current page?

Tangential comment: It would be nice to have a way to access all titles by a particular author and/or publisher. This would allow for comments on quality of groups of works, as well as facilitating finding relevant info on individuals or families that might have found its way into more than one work by the same author (thinking here especially of local history/genealogy works), since people moved around and authors sometimes repurpose content.

Searching for and cataloguing books- That's what gengophers does, I don't know if we could do better than that.

As for the organization, what about a sortable wikitable? That should be easy enough to pull out of what is here on the page, and then you could create separate fields for surname, for author, for publisher, etc

I would be willing to help with that

Rick, sample of what I just pulled out into Excel on my sandbox page: https://www.wikitree.com/index.php?title=Space:Crawford7109sandbox&public=1 and then converted to a sortable WikiTable, if you want me to do this for the whole page let me know. There are some simple formatting fixes that will need to happen for the few records that have elements missing, but no big deal.

(I should note, first - I have additional stuff on that page that I am tracking for other reasons, please ignore the stuff after the family A sources. Secondly - I have the table and then the original copy of the A data from this page, so you can see them both)

I can add do a separate column for each first letter, so we can keep the spans and jump halfway down the table quickly. I didn't do that here, because I just did the A's. Or we can add additional data elements if you wanted to pull something else out that I missed.

Very interesting. I didn't know that was possible. I only use this page for searching for a source, so I wouldn't use the sorting capability. Also, the basic format in this page, as seen in the Edit Tab, is the same format I use for adding sources to WikiTree profiles (using a simple cut and paste). So converting it to a different format, such as converting it to a table, would interfere with this cut-and-paste process.

I've requested to be on the Trusted List for your page, so I can see how it was put together.

I understand the formatting, that's why I left the full citation in the last field. The Sorting would allow for name variants to be seen even if that wasn't what you were searching for (ex. if I searched for "Crawford" but there was a "Craufurd" option also, I might not know/think to look at that one). I know that things are still in alphabetical order(ish) but Ctrl+F on a page this large would only find exact matches, and people might not scroll to browse.

Plus, Don's comment would be possible by sorting on the author/publisher columns: "It would be nice to have a way to access all titles by a particular author and/or publisher. This would allow for comments on quality of groups of works, as well as facilitating finding relevant info on individuals or families that might have found its way into more than one work by the same author (thinking here especially of local history/genealogy works), since people moved around and authors sometimes repurpose content."

But, I think it's usable as is, just offering to help if you want it. This really is an amazing resource, thank you for putting it all together (and all your work creating free-space pages for these sources)!

Jennifer, Thank you for creating the Binford source. I've added it to this page under "Binford". Those other families you listed are also now in this list.

Hi Rick,

I’ve added a Free Space page linking to the Binford Family Genealogy and Supplement. At the bottom of the page are links to genealogies for the Chappell, and Cox Families. Perhaps you could clean up my sources and attach them to this wonderful page?

Hi Rick, I just added a new free space profile for a book. Followed the profile you created for the Wallen/Walling book.

Let me know what you think. az

Susan, I'm not sure what the problem was, but it is now working.

Chip, Yes, please add it. The Free-Space page will give us a place to share information about the book. (If want me to add it, please let me know.)

Does it make sense to add a book here such as The Descendants of Gov. Thomas Welles from Google Books even though it's a "Get Print Book," with limited online access? I haven't seen it elsewhere.

Caryl, I add your source under 'Pruett'.

Hi Rick,

I just found out about this project in a G2G thread. Thanks for your hard work. I have a document that was written by my Great great grandfather that includes a wealth of information about his parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles. It has birth dates, marriages and family stories. I have created a freespace profile for it. How do I get it included here so that other Pruett descendants can easily locate it.
