We're Related!

One of the really cool things about WikiTree is that everyone only gets one profile, which makes connecting with cousins and seeing your relationship with someone - by blood or marriage - a click away using the Relationship Finder (RF) or Connection Finder (CF), respectively.
So what to do with that information?

Stickers

WikiTree has three stickers that can be used to show your connection to anyone - Descendant, Relationship Sticker, and Connection Sticker - and many projects have dedicated or tailored stickers that you could also use on your profile (see the following sections for WikiTree-Wide Stickers and Project-Specific Stickers, respectively). "Heritage Stickers" (below) include "Roots Stickers", "Ancestor" stickers, "Born In" stickers, and "Lived In" stickers. For societies, such as DAR, there is the "Society Member" sticker (see below). For a selection of how WikiTree members display their relationships, see Examples (below).

For all stickers listed, please be sure to check the template page for details about the use of the sticker. Most will say how the sticker is intended to be used and all will include details such as sticker parameters. This page was created to share the three WikiTree-Wide Stickers as well as a list with some basic information about available "Project-Specific Stickers". While the Project-specific stickers listed below have some notes, you should still check the template page for additional information and to verify that the information hasn't changed - this page is updated manually. For an automatically updated display of all stickers, with notes, see this page (especially the National section).[1]

Remember that even if stickers can be used on an ancestor's profile, it does not necessarily mean that they should. Stickers added to profiles other than your own need to follow WikiTree's guidelines for stickers (the sticker is relevant to the person represented by the profile, no one objects to the sticker being displayed, and the profile has no more than five stickers).

Profiles for your ancestors are restricted to no more than five stickers (and WikiTree guidance says three is better - see Help:Stickers), but there is no limit to the number of stickers you can have on your own profile.

WikiTree-Wide Stickers

Descendant

Descendant
Descendant of Edward III.
{{Descendant
|id=[[Plantagenet-70|Edward III]]}}
This sticker can be used on any profile, provided it follows WikiTree's guidelines for stickers (the sticker is relevant to the person represented by the profile, no one objects to the sticker being displayed, and the profile has no more than five stickers). It is very flexible. See Template: Descendant for details.
Descendant
Descendant of Charlemagne (per WikiTree).
The following coding can be used to add a clickable link showing the relationship according to WikiTree, but you'll need to add the appropriate WikiTree IDs. Note: If one of the WikiTree-IDs is your own, the sticker should be used only on your profile page, not your ancestor's profile.[2]
  • [https://www.wikitree.com/index.php?title=Special:Relationship&action=calculate&person1_name=WikiTree-ID&person2_name=WikiTree-ID WikiTree]
  • The example uses the following coding:
    {{Descendant||id=[[Plantagenet-70|Edward III]] (per [https://www.wikitree.com/index.php?title=Special:Relationship&action=calculate&person1_name=Plantagenet-70&person2_name=Carolingian-77 WikiTree])}}

Relationship Sticker

NOTE - The Relationship Sticker and the Connection Sticker are restricted for use on profiles of active WikiTree members only.[3]
Relationship

{{Relationship Sticker

|name=Queen Elizabeth II
|id=Windsor-1}}
{{Relationship Sticker
|image= Popular_Errors_in_Colonial_and_Medieval_Lineages-1.png
|name=Edward III
|id=Plantagenet-70}}
Note that the clickable link to the results of Special: Relationship will not work in the examples - it will once saved on your own profile (it won't work until it's saved - in other words, it won't work in preview either).
This sticker is restricted for use on profiles of active WikiTree members. The two parameters are required (the name and the id of the person you're related to). The rest, including the RF trail, is automatic. You can change the default image by using the "image=" parameter. See Template: Relationship Sticker for details.

Connection Sticker

NOTE - The Relationship Sticker and the Connection Sticker are restricted for use on profiles of active WikiTree members only.[3]
Connection
Connection

{{Connection Sticker

Note that the clickable link to the results of Special: Connection will not work in the examples - it will once saved on your own profile (it won't work until it's saved - in other words, it won't work in preview either).
This sticker also is restricted for use on profiles of active WikiTree members. It is different from the "Related to" sticker only in its wording (including the path link being the CF trail) and default image. See Template: Connection Sticker for details.

Project-Specific Stickers

Check the project page of the project managing the profile you're interested in for more information about the project (and in case I missed any in the following list). The project box displayed on a project-managed profile will include a link to that project's main page.

Acadian Project

Acadian Flag
... ... ... is a descendant of an Acadian
{{Acadian Sticker}}
This sticker can be used on any profile, provided its use follows sticker, project, and WikiTree guidelines:

Bermuda Project

... ... ... was an early or significant Bermudan.
{{Bermuda Sticker}}
While this sticker can be used on any profile, its wording restricts it to persons who were "significant" to Bermuda's history. It is, therefore, not included in the "Heritage Stickers" category.

Descendants of Pocahontas Project

Matoaka Amonute Powhatan
... ... ... is a descendant of Pocahontas. Here is the trail.
{{Pocahontas}}
Note - the trail will not work until the sticker is saved to a profile.
This sticker is not restricted to profiles of active WikITree members, but should not be used on a profile unless the generated trail to Pocahontas is valid (each parent/child relationship supported by reliable sources). For more information, see

DNA Project

Big Y700 YDNA Haplogroup
Big Y700 YDNA Haplogroup {{{1}}} Earliest Known Ancestor.
{{YDNA 700 Earliest Known Ancestor}}
Full Sequence mtDNA Haplogroup {{{1}}} Earliest Known Ancestor
Full Sequence mtDNA Haplogroup {{{1}}} Earliest Known Ancestor
{{MTDNA Earliest Known Ancestor}}
These stickers are not included in the "Heritage Stickers" category, since they are used on the ancestor's profile - the Earliest Known Ancestor of a BigY700 or mtDNA tester - not the tester's profile.
The sticker automatically adds the profile to a category, either for the haplogroup or a DNA Project Maintenance Category. Use should follow sticker and WikiTree guidelines; contact the DNA Project if you need assistance:

Germany Project

Dithmarschen flag
Born in Dithmarschen, Schleswig-Holstein.
{{Nonmigrating Ancestor |addinfo=Born in Dithmarschen, Schleswig-Holstein. |flag=German_Flags-35.png |tooltip=Dithmarschen flag }}
The Germany Project used the Nonmigrating Ancestor sticker for "born in" or "lived in" stickers when needed. Now, however, the project has both a {{Germany Sticker}} as well as the {{German Roots Sticker}} (listed below).
For locations without a Roots sticker, there's the Heritage Sticker. For locations without a born in or lived in sticker, the Templates Project recommends using the Nonmigrating Ancestor sticker.
See Germany Project Templates for additional coding for stickers that you can add to your profile; for images, see German Flags. Stickers based on either the Nonmigrating Ancestor sticker or the Descendant sticker can be used on any profile, provided their use follows project and WikiTree guidelines:

Huguenot Migration Project

... ... ... is the descendant of a Huguenot emigrant.
{{Huguenot Descendant}}
This sticker can be used on any profile, provided its use follows sticker, project, and WikiTree guidelines:

Ireland Project

Many projects now have a space page devoted to templates and stickers relevant to the project. For example, the Irleand Project's Ireland Badges Templates and Stickers page. See also Ireland on this page.

Italy Project

See Italy Project Templates. One of them, the Italian Roots Sticker, is listed under I, below. See also the Society Member sticker, which has an option for OSIA - the Order Sons of Italy in America.

Latin America Project

Just two of several options to show that you are descended from Jamestown colonists. For more, see Stickers for Jamestown Colony.
These stickers are based on the Descendant sticker, so they can be used on any profile, provided their use follows project and WikiTree guidelines:

United States Project

The United States Project does not have a descendant sticker, but see the list of stickers by State at Category: United States Project Stickers & click through to their template pages for coding and parameters. All of the State-level stickers can be modified to show "born in...", some have a "|text=" parameter that allow you to use it to note your descendancy from a famous son (or daughter) of that state, and at least one of its subprojects has its own descendant sticker (Texas). This list displays the stickers and includes the stickers' parameters.

Texas

... ... ... is a descendant of a Texas First Family who settled in the Republic of Texas before February 19, 1846.
{{Texas First Families |flag = Flags_of_North_America-26.png |type = family}}

First Peoples Project Stickers

The First Peoples Project is the administrative umbrella project for a host of projects, ranging from the complex First Peoples Canada Project to the Chibcha Tribe of Colombia (a sub-project of the Muisca Confederation Project). The very popular Descendants of Pocahontas Project is actually a team under the Native Americans Project, which falls under the First Peoples Project umbrella.

Many of these projects have project boxes for profiles they manage. They also have the following stickers (arranged alphabetically by sticker name). Please do not use these stickers casually. The profile should include valid support for the sticker used.

Cherokee Clans

... ... ... was a member of the Cherokee Wolf Clan.
{{Cherokee Clans|Wolf}}
Note that Cherokee clan identity comes from the mother. Please document the source of your information in the biography. Profiles lacking this documentation are subject to having the sticker removed. Generally, living Cherokee would not display this sticker.
This sticker can be used on any profile, provided its use follows sticker, project, and WikiTree guidelines:

First Peoples Canada Sticker

{{Indigenous Colombian Sticker}}
This sticker was created to be used on profiles of members of the Muisca Confederation and of the Chibcha Tribe, but can be used on the profile of any Indigenous Colombian provided its use follows sticker, project, and WikiTree guidelines:

Native American Sticker

... was Ojibway.
{{Native American Sticker|tribe=Ojibway}}
This sticker can be used on any profile, provided its use follows sticker, project, and WikiTree guidelines:

Pocahontas

Matoaka Amonute Powhatan
... ... ... is a descendant of Pocahontas. Here is the trail.
{{Pocahontas}}
Note - the trail will not work until the sticker is saved to a profile.
This sticker is not restricted to profiles of active WikiTree members, but should not be used on a profile unless the generated trail to Pocahontas is valid (each parent/child relationship supported by reliable sources). For more information, see

Heritage Stickers

Flag of Greece
... has Greek roots.

A "Heritage Sticker" is available if there's not a dedicated sticker for your ancestors, roots, or heritage.

This section includes dedicated "Heritage Stickers", mostly created for projects (see this category). They include "Roots Stickers" and stickers that display similar wording. I refer to them as "Ancestor" stickers, since that wording is along the lines of "... ... ... has English ancestors." Note that the England Project conveyed the following stipulation about its {{English Ancestor Sticker}}

The English Ancestor Sticker should only be used on a profile "where the person or their ancestors were English emigrants to another country. Please do not use on the profile of a person who spent their life in England."

This caveat makes sense for all of the Roots Stickers. "Born in" stickers can be used for those who were born in the country of their ancestors. There's even a "Born Abroad" sticker you could use (see below). And many projects have "Lived in" stickers that can be used for those who were born there, immigrated there, or were "of" there (lived in the place for a significant amount of time). The New Zealand sticker notes on its template page that it can be used for people who were born in or who immigrated to New Zealand. If there is not an existing "Born in" or "Lived in" sticker for the place you are looking for, use the very flexible Nonmigrating Ancestor sticker (originally created as a "one flag" option to the Migrating Ancestor sticker, for those who did not leave the country where they were born). These two stickers are listed under Additional Personal Stickers, below.

While the "Roots Stickers" and "Ancestor" stickers are most often used by active WikiTree members if they, or their ancestors, emigrated from their "Roots" location, the "Born in" and "Lived in" stickers are equally appropriate for ancestors' profiles (keeping in mind the "5/3" rule - no more than five stickers; three is better).

The following list of Heritage Stickers contains even less information than the list of "Project-Specific Stickers, so please be sure to check the sticker's template page to see if its use is restricted. Because all stickers use the base template "Sticker", you can find them all in Category: Stickers (the entries with "/docs", which hold the template's documentation, display the same as the entries without "/docs", which hold the template's coding). Or you can add the sticker's main name (what's between {{ and the the first | ) to wikitree.com/wiki/Template: - for example:

Note: If the coding example in the list below is clickable, clicking it will take you to the sticker's template page.

The "Description" section of the template page may note how the sticker can be used, or text below the Info box may give details. Check the Info box for a timeframe and a project - if a timeframe shows, say, 1200-1776, then it's not a sticker that you can use on your own profile, since you were not alive between those years. Knowing the project is helpful if you're not sure whether or not you can use the sticker on your own profile. Another way to tell if a sticker is managed by a project is if it adds a category (if it does, the Examples table will have a column for the category/ies).

Canada Flag
... ... ... est né en Québec, Canada.

And the best reason to check a sticker's template page is to discover the hidden treasures that might await you. For instance, the example for the Canada sticker (below) gives one glint ("|born in=yes" - otherwise it's a "Lived in" sticker), but there's so much more. The sticker at right (or above, depending on screen size) is based on the Canada Sticker!

Note - There are several projects that focus primarily on migrating ancestors - easily identifiable by "Migration" being included in the project's name. Check their project pages for more information, which may include additional stickers. Ones appropriate to add to your own profile are listed above (Huguenot Migration Project, Palatine Migration Project, and Puritan Great Migration Project); the entries include links to the project page.

See the table of examples (below) for how the default sticker displays and examples using the parameters added in July 2021." The first sticker at right is the default. The second is one of the examples (see Template: American Patriot for the coding and for additional information and examples).
... ... ... is a Military Veteran.

See "Military" for a list of other stickers related to the Military.

Society Member

Freemason
... ... ... is a Freemason.
{{Society Member

Note: See Template:Society Member for societies supported by the sticker.
The sticker can be used on any society member's profile (past or present).

Need Images?

You can use a different image for any sticker with the parameter image= as an option. Finding a good sticker image can sometimes be a challenge (what might look good on the image page may be too busy to look good "sticker sized"), and the question has been raised in several G2G posts (see for example this post and this one and this comment, which was the source for the initial list below, and from June 2023, this discussion).

I think there are probably lots more WikiTree members with image pages to share. If you're one of them & your page is not listed, you can send me a private message or post a comment with the link to your page.

In addition to exploring the following links, remember that you can right click on any sticker image to see the file name (this should work unless the sticker's image has been coded to be clickable), which is what you need to add as the image= parameter.

These two top-level categories should help you find whatever you are looking for: the first will list all stickers and the second should capture all the other image pages in its subcategories.

Examples

This section is for sharing examples of how active WikiTree members share their relationship(s) with others. It's a selection based on variety. If you'd like to see a profile added, let the page manager know (send a private message, so we don't include someone's profile without their permission).

Footnotes
  1. Collections of stickers can be found on several pages, aside from "Automated:Template Sticker" just referenced and this Relationship Stickers page. Because Stickers are all created using the Template:Sticker base, they are all listed under Category:Stickers. On that page, you'll find several sub-categories (such as Category:United States Project Stickers). There is also Francis Lehman's "The Encyclopedia of Sticker Templates".
  2. Descendant stickers placed on ancestors' profile that are not relevant for that person will be removed from the profile. For example, King Edward III's relationship to Charlemagne is relevant to Edward - not so much to Charlemagne, since Edward is just one of many royals who descend from Charlemagne. The coding example given to show Edward's relationship to Charlemagne would be removed from Charlemagne's profile. It could also be removed from Edward's profile at the discretion of the profile manager (project or person), if there were too many stickers, or if anyone objected to it being displayed.
  3. 3.0 3.1 Relationship Stickers and Connection Stickers added to profiles other than your own will be removed. See Category:Member-Only Stickers for other Heritage stickers that can only be used on active WikiTree members' profiles.

Hey Liz - would you add this second sticker to the list for the DNA project, please? Also could you add a title section for us? =DNA Project=

Thanks!

Done. Turns out, I hadn't quite understood the DNA sticker that had been included (I had it listed with the others that are appropriate for a WikiTree member's profile).

Could you check the #DNA Project section that I added, to make sure the info I posted is appropriate?

Cheers, Liz

Hi Matt! The place to propose new stickers is in G2G (see Help:Stickers#Creation_and_Editing).

However, if you have uploaded suitable images, I think you could use the Heritage Sticker for both. See Template: Heritage Sticker. As mentioned above, under Space:Relationship_Stickers#Heritage_Stickers:

A "Heritage Sticker" is available if there's not a dedicated sticker for your ancestors, roots, or heritage.

Cheers, Liz

How about adding a Block Sticker choice for “Direct Descendant” as opposed to just the one for “Descendant”.
Hi! Suggestions to change existing stickers - or create new ones - should be posted to G2G (you can use the "move to G2G" link to move your comment to G2G.

Cheers, Liz

Liz, I wanted to the add the new Palatine Migration Descendant sticker to this page, but I don't have editing access here. This is a Heritage Sticker related to the Palatine Migration Project. It is for use on profiles of descendants of Palatine migrants. "Palatine migrants" were German-speaking people usually called "Palatine Germans" or "Palatines," who emigrated from their homelands and settled in North America, Ireland and elsewhere in the 18th century, prior to the American Revolution. The earliest Palatine migrants were the "Poor Palatines," many of them from the Electoral Palatinate region of Germany, who went to England in 1709.

Are there any Stickers for people who are or have the Woodsmen of the World headstones?

Not a designated sticker, no. You might want to ask in G2G (tagged Cemeteries) - the Cemeterist Project might have a sticker that could be tailored for it.
