Philip Smith was born in Massachusetts about February 1770, based on his age of 96 years, 2 months at his death in April 1866, from his gravestone,[1] and his age of 90 shown in the 1860 census.[2] An Ancestry.com tree says that he was the son of Joseph Smith and Experience (Talbot) Smith and was born at Stoughton, Massachusetts, on 4 Jun 1772. That tree cites an entry in the American Genealogical-Biographical Index, which cites an entry in the genealogical column of the Boston Transcript for 28 Mar 1928.[3], but that is not sufficient evidence to support the identification, and no other record of the birth has been found.
Marriage
On 23 Dec 1799, Mr. Philip Smith and Mrs. Ruth Wadsworth, both of Stoughton, Massachusetts, published at Stoughton their intention to marry.[4]
Residences and Children
The first child of Philip and Ruth Smith was Ruth Howard Smith. She was born in Massachusetts, according to the 1850 census, and her birth on 11 Dec 1800 was recorded in the birth records of Livermore, Maine. By 5 Feb 1802, the date of birth of their second child, Katharine (or Catherine) Withington Smith, the Smith family (including Jesse Wadsworth, Ruth's son from her first marriage) had moved to Livermore, which was then in Massachusetts. Their third and last child, Elizabeth Bird Smith, was born there on 21 Mar 1805. Ruth (Hayward) (Wadsworth) Smith died at Livermore on 29 Nov 1828.[5] The northeastern part of Livermore where the family lived was set off as the town of East Livermore in 1843 (and renamed Livermore Falls in 1930), and Philip continued to live there until his death at the age of 96 in 1866.
Death
Philip Smith died on 11 Apr 1866, and he is buried at the Moose Hill Cemetery in Livermore Falls, Maine, where his gravestone gives his age at his death as 96 years, 2 months.[1]
