Biography

Birth

No record has been found of the birth of Jesse Smith, and his parents are unknown. Based on his age at his death from his gravestone, he was born about 1763. He was not the Jesse Smith born in 1750 at Stoughton, Massachusetts. See the Research Note below.

Marriage

Jesse Smith 2d and Sarah Briggs, both of Stoughton, Massachusetts, married there on 3 Dec 1786.[1]

Death

Jesse Smith died on 25 Nov 1843, and he is buried at the Moose Hill Cemetery in Livermore Falls, Maine.[2]

Research Note

The 1979 Bryant family genealogy claims that the Jesse Smith of Livermore, Maine, was the child of that name born to Joseph and Experience (Talbot) Smith at Stoughton, Massachusetts, on 5 May 1750, and that he married, first, Lois Everett, and second, Sarah Briggs.[3] There was a child of that name born to Joseph and Experience Smith on that date,[4] but the birth date conflicts with the age of Jesse Smith in the 1830 census, when he is recorded as between 60 and 70 years old,[5] and his age of 79 at his death in 1843 from his gravestone.[2] Census ages and ages on gravestones are often wrong, but rarely by as much as 13 years. A Jesse Smith married a Lois Everett at Stoughton in 1772, and their last known child was recorded in 1785,[6] so it is possible that the Jesse Smith who married Sarah Briggs in 1786 and moved to Livermore was the widower of Lois Everett; but the marriage record of Jesse and Hannah identifies him as Jesse Smith 2d,[1] indicating that he was the younger of two men named Jesse Smith living at Stoughton at the time. The weight of the evidence thus shows that Jesse Smith of Livermore, Maine, and the Jesse Smith born at Stoughton in 1750 were two different men. The two men were probably related in some way; they both named a son Mace.

A candidate for the Jesse Smith of Livermore is the Jesse Smith born at Milton, Massachusetts, to Philip and Mary Smith on 15 Mar 1761,[7] but more research is necesssary to establish the connection.
