Biography

William Smith, son of Joseph Smith and Mary Hawes, was born 14 Apr 1727 in Stoughton, Suffolk [Norfolk] County, Massachusetts. [1]

He married in Stoughton 23 Sep 1747 Katherine Withington of Stoughton.[2]

According to the "Smith Genealogy" (est.1931) at Stoughton Historical Society (no author/compiler), he lived in Stoughton at Bay and Highland streets, house was back of present 55 Highland. He apparently inherited the western half of father's land at the pond, including the old home; brother Joseph Smith Jr.’s farm was 66 acres (ab. half of 120).

[In 1793 their area was included in a new county, Norfolk.]

He died in Stoughton 23 Oct 1819.[3] and was buried in Dry Pond Cemetery.[4]
