Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
Katherine (Farrar) Barnett was a Virginia colonist.

Katherine was born about 1700 on Farrar's Island, Virginia and her parents were Katherine (Perrin) and Thomas Farrar.

Katherine Farrar married about 1718 in Virginia to John Barnett [1] and their children included [2] ...

  1. Thomas Barnett
  2. Jesse Barnett
  3. Richard Barnett
  4. John Farrar
  5. William Barnett
  6. Joseph Barnett
  7. Edward Barnett
  8. Catherine Barnett
  9. Whitley Barnett
  10. Sarah Barnett
  11. Mary Barnett
  12. Frances Barnett.

In 1740 she was given a negro woman by Will of her father, Thomas Farrar. [3]

On 16 May 1748 Katherine Farrar made a deed to her daughter, Katherine (wife of John Barnet). [4]

On 18 Oct 1763, she and her sons Thomas and Jesse Barnett sold 175 acres of land which adjoined John Bibb et als, part of which had been bought by their father from John Farrar on 16 Dec 1729. [5] The land was in Albemarle County after 1744 and in Fluvanna County after 1777 when those counties were formed.

Katherine died in 1783 in Henrico County, USA and was buried in Granville, North Carolina, USA.

Research Notes

  • There was a Katherine Barnett mentioned in Katherine Isham's will of 10 Oct 1686, so she would have been 63 yrs old if Jesse was born in 1749 (which he swore to in court). Possibly *that* Kate Farrar died and a second was born 14 yrs later. 1700 is listed as approximate date, and an elder Katherine will be created.

There is a theory on FamilySearch that I listed in the Research Notes. Thoughts?

Hi, Ashton

It is a "theory;" are there any documents or verifiable sources to prove it? As you can see, there are several PMs on this profile, and it could use some work.

Thank you for bringing this up and hopefully the Farrar profiles will be improved this year.

Happy New Year!

Happy (belated lol) New Year. No, I have no source to prove they are two individuals. My so-called theory (if you can even call it that) is based off logic. Katherine's youngest son swore to his age being compatible with a birth year of 1749. "Katherine" was mentioned in the will of her great-grandmother in 1686. That would make her a mother in her 60s. Sure, that CAN happen today. However, back then, no technology could make that probable. Hence why I have a feeling the Katherine mentioned in her ggma's will and the Katherine who married John Barnett are two different people. Ofc I understand this might be a mistake based off no documentation (and I am willing to yield if I am wrong), but I feel the "theory" is more probable.

Hi, Ashton

I appreciate your comment. Have you looked at the proposed merge profile comparison? I'd like to know what you think about it.

I hope the other PMs chime in also.

Take care ~ Sheryl

Farrar-2306 and Farrar-98 appear to represent the same person because: These are definitely the same person. Thomas Farrar and Katherine Perrin had only one daughter Katherine and she married John Barnett. She was born in 1687. When Farrar-2306 was created, the DoB was in error. I suspect that the purpose was to make feasible downstream descendants. It happens all of the time, if a profile (ancestor) doesn't fit because of the time line, then the timeline is adjusted to make a fit. Please approve the match, there is no valid reason not to.

Farrar-2306 and Farrar-98 are not ready to be merged because: Not evident they are the same person with a 13 year difference in dates, no other comparable dates or mates. Other vitals need research.

It appears that this profile, which is a duplicate, was created to give the profile of Frank Barnett born 1675 parents. Farrar-98 already has a son named Frank, but born much later than 1675. Katherine Farrar-98 Barnett's Dob, parentage, marriage and children are well documented. If the Frank Barnett to which this profile was connected was indeed the son of Katherine Farrar Barnett, then his DoB is wrong, otherwise he was another Frank Barnett.

Farrar-2978 and Farrar-98 appear to represent the same person because: Veery definitely a duplicate. Thomas Farrar and katherine Perrin had only one daughter named Katherine, and she married John Barnett. The Barnett descendants of this union have well documented this fact.

Katherine Barnett and this family line need further research as there are comingled families. There are children she had not in this record or the other profile.

Further research is needed.

Please correct spelling of last name. It is Farrar not Farrer.

Thank you
