Seeking birth record and marriage record for George Hatherly, B. 1809 in Devonshire

I'm not that adept yet at navigating British records, so hoping for some help. I've got quite a bit of information that should hopefully be helpful.

Name: George Hatherly

Parents: William and Margaret (this is noted on his death record - Margaret's maiden name is not listed)

Born: September 1809 in Devonshire (again, this is according to his death record)

Married: Eliza Cowell/Colwell (Eliza was born in 1812 and their first child was born in 1833, so likely married in 1832-ish)

- Found in 1841 England Census with wife and 3 children in a workhouse in Cornwall, England

- Immigrated sometime in the early 1850s to Ontario, Canada

- Immigrated again by 1870 to Lapeer County, Michigan, United States

- Died in 1894 in Lapeer County, Michigan

Note:

I have a lot of records for him listed in the Sources section of his profile, but the earliest record I have is the 1841 England Census.

I really need his marriage record and/or birth record to find out his mother's maiden name and his wife's parent's names.

As well as FamilySearch, good Cornish record locations include:

Cornwall Online Parish Clerk Site - lots of searchable info (BMD, Banns, etc)  You can't link to each record as a source in case the record number in the db changes.

Cornwall Census Project - Every census transcribed from 1841 - 1901.  Not searchable but this info has now been passed over to FreeCen and it is searchable there. (See below)

Good general UK sites.  BMD certificates available from Sept 1837:

FreeCen - Transcribing British census info from 1841 and making it available for free.  Searchable and already includes all of Cornwall from above Cornwall Census Project.

FreeReg - Transcribing Parish Records for free, work in progress but making big strides.

FreeBMD - Transcribing English/Welsh BMD info.  Been going a long time.  This gives you the reference required for ordering BMD certificates but it's also useful for finding potential marriage/birth/death info.  After 1912 Mother's maiden name is listed on birth info. These are not the certificates themselves, but it is a very useful resource.

General Records Office - This is where you would order the certificates identified by FreeBMD, but they also have two searchable databases, Birth and Death.  The birth records list the mother's maiden name in most cases from 1837, which is invaluable.  You must create a login to access.

For example... here's your Edwin Hatherly showing the quarter he was registered in (Jan-Feb-MARCH), the year, the location and mother's maiden name.  Volume and Page are the references to order the certificate. :

      ! Super fast.

Does the fact the parent names are not listed in the transcription mean they are not in the original document?

I really don't know the answer to that question.

You could try finding the document to see. It doesn't show any detail on ancestry.com
Also have to wonder how to properly put the marriage record found as a source?

Just put Cornwall Family History Society?
        That sounds right.

These were the marriagewitnesses.  Could be church Wardens, or they could be related to either the bride or groom.  Just putting this out there in case it helps with your research at some point.

I'm pretty sure you are correct in that, if the parents' names are not in the transcription, then they weren't there in the original.  A lot of the earlier marriage records just had the date and 'John Doe married Mary Smith'.

This is also a very useful site:
        http://www.opc-cornwall.org/
I'd put the source as "Cornwall Marriages Transcription, Cornwall Family History Society". That way it tells you where the FHS got it (I looked him up on Findmypast to find out where they got it.)

        Thanks so much!

At the very least I have a location in Devon for future research.

Shame the name has to be so common - I swear I have so many Johns and Williams in my ancestors. Haha.

        You rock - thanks again!

It might be worth pointing out that Shebbear was particularly Wesleyan Methodist and the home of the Bible Christians.

I was  just going to add this above as  I noticed that in the 1851 Canadian Census that George and his family were Bible Christians.

        see http://www.shebbearvillage.co.uk/biblechristians.pdf

There were a  very large number of Colwells/Colwills in the baptism registers of the  Bible Christians on the Cornwall OPC  (but no Hatherleys)

The Shebbear circuit included Kilkhampton and Holsworthy http://www.mybiblechristians.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/Bible-Christian-Chapels-in-Cornwall-1901.pdf
